I think he has either the Nvidia 8400M GS or the integrated Intel X3100, because that's the only two graphics card you can select for the Dell Inspiron 1420.

It says in his specs "8400M GS".

You can play all sorts of games. Elder Scrolls Oblivion would probably top the charts, at medium graphics level.

Agreed. The 8400 is a nice little budget gamer card, not to mention it overclocks like crazy, though you don't need to in order the enjoy your games. Just ensure you run a current driver from the laptopvideo2go collection and leave AA/AF low or off. My mom's 1520 with an 8400 plays UT3 nicely.

And don't be disheartened by Oblivion if it isn't the smoothest- it's a monster on any system. :D

8400gs does overclock like crazy.. and can handle it just fine.. I went from an average of 35-40 fps in World of Warcraft to an average of 70-80 fps.. Easily a solid 30+ fps in that game for me. Mileage may vary ;)

I went from the stock 400/500 to 612/891.

what is the overclocking software of choice used for tweaking the Nvidia card without sending it into meltdown?

I have the same GPU. Whenever I play Battlefield 2, the game optimizes the textures/objects before it allows me to enter in multiplayer game. Its takes forever and when it finally finishes, the game has ended

It's not really a software choice that'll send it to meltdown, more just ignorance or lack of common sense when ramping up clock speeds. Whether it's ATITool, nTune, or Rivatuner with the older =/<150 drivers or a BIOS flash with anything newer, just remember to go 5MHz or so at a time, stability test with 3DMark loops or nVidia's own control panel test, and then continue until you get a lockup or artifacts. Then dial it down a bit, and you've found your max. :D

That sounds like a glitch, as it is only supposed to do that when you change a graphic setting (texture detail, res, etc.) Try patching the game, and if it is already patched, try a different graphics driver. It should only do that optimization once, and then you should be golden.
