Well I order a Dell e1705 and I want to purchase the ram seperate and install it myself because it will be more economical. Does any one have any advice for which type ram I should get (such as company, type, and speed). I want 2 gigs. I'm a college student so If you can save me money that would be fantastic. Also anyone know how to install ram. If you have done it before on the e1705 can you give me advice. Thanks for your time!

Last week I got 2GB of the pc5300 transcend which somehow just got cheaper than the pc4200....and cheaper than last week...works great in my e1705...ebayed the 1GB 533 that came from dell to offset my upgrading cost

I think the differences in the ram are very little (between 667 and 533) I think it has to do with the cas latency? help?

Assuming they're running the same frequency, correct?

    CAS4 (533mhz) is better than CAS5 (533mhz)

    But...

    Is CAS5 (667mhz) better than CAS4 (533mhz)?

Ah, this is where I should be asking this question. I tried in the main notebook upgrade forum and nobody will reply.

I just picked up an Inspiron E1705 and here are the specs.

    Core™ Duo Processor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB),
Memory 512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
    Video Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS
Hard Drive 100GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

This is my second big 'ol Dell. I have an Inspiron 9300 with 2.0 GHz Centrino, 2 GB of Transcend RAM, NVIDIA Geforce Go 6800, and an 80 GB 7200 RPM Drive. Well, that laptop definately rocks but my wife was in need of a better computer than she currently has. She is going to end up getting my "old" computer (not even 6 months old ) and the E1705 will be my new one. As you can see, I'm hoping to do the same thing as I did in my last one, namely upgrading the RAM to 2 GB for about half of what Dell wants.

It looks like there are two kinds of 667MHz RAM out there. DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) and DDR2 667 (PC2 5400). Looking on New Egg, there are more options for the 5300 but the price for the 5400 is just about the same. What is the difference? Here is the link to the PC2 5400 RAM on NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubCategory=381

Can you please suggest which one I should go with? I have used Transcend in my previous laptop and it has never had a problem. There are quite a few options and the prices only differer about $15 or less between them (excluding Crucial and Kingston of course). Anything jump out at you as a must buy, or a must avoid? Thanks for your help!

AFAIK, PC2-5400 isn't compatible w/ the E1705. Only PC2-4200 & PC2-5300 will work with the E1705 (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). If that's the case & you want 667mhz, your only choice would be PC2-5300.

I chatted with Dell support about this and they confirmed what j4y 7 said. 5400 isn't supported, but I don't know if that is just becuase they haven't tried it or what. I'll bet someone will try it one day and be able to say for sure. Until then, the word from Dell is only 4200 and 5300. Bummer. I'd try it, but I'd rather not have to waste the time and 15% restocking fee if it doesn't and having to return that stuff to NewEgg.

Well, after talking to a couple other friends that are computer nuts, they all suggested not to take the chance that "maybe" 5400 might work. I went with the Transcend 5300 667MHz RAM (2 gig worth) from NewEgg. They are $82 each with a $10 rebate on them. My other laptop (the one I'm on right now) has 2 GB of the Transcend DDR2 4200 533MHz on it and I have been very satisfied. Moral of the story, it's easy to get 2 gig of RAM in your notebook for half the money Dell wants. Good luck to you and it's time to turn on a game. Oblivion here I come.
