Is there much of a big difference...other than the color options///the XPS is lil bit more expensive so i dont think its worth getting the inspiron just to save 200 or so.

Also, should I upgrade to the student software that includes word and excel, ($150), if my brother already got the inspiron 1520 with it, can I just use that and instal it on my computer.

The M1530 is offered with a dedicated graphics card. The 1525 does not.

I think this decision depends on what you need the computer for.
If you just need it for office applications, internet and basic entertainment I think you wouldn't mind goind with the 1525. But if you are an occasional gamer or need the pc for graphic-applications I would definately go with the m1530 because of its dedicated graphics option, namely the geforce 8600m gt. The 1525 can only be configured with an integrated intel x3100 which isn't complete crap but which only satisfies basic graphic needs like watching a dvd etc.

configure the inspiron over 1,250 and save $400. I think this coupon is for any inspiron, but i tried it w/ the 1420.

weight and size may or may not be a factor for u. The xps is lighter.

I would get the xps if i were you. As for the software, you need your own license.

The main reason I continue to get xps is because of the superior support. Something to consider. I always get support and that quickly and with someone I can understand.
