My wife is getting a 1420 with Vista for xmas. I have a 1720....what should I do to the 1420 to make it as fast as possible? I will be installed 2GB RAM when it comes, but what should I do about the system, etc.?? I prefer not to do a total re-format as I have no idea how to re-install the drivers, which drivers to install, etc. etc...thanks!

TuneUp Utilities are great, but I'm a Vista Manager guy now.

I did not like V.M at the time I had Vista installed..
Still each to their own..oh yeah also run jv16 powertools. Between the 2 apps system runs ever so sweet on XP as it does on Vista too.

Uninstall the bloatware, run CCleaner to clean up everything, and disable the start up of programs that don't need to be running at startup inside of MSconfig.

Really nothing works as well as a full reformat and its not hard to do. Drivers are uniquely easy to come by through Dell and you will probably even have disks with everything on them. Problem with simply uninstalling programs is peices of some of the programs such as McAffee and AOL will always remain behind to slow your wifes computer down inside the registery.

I only trust Uniblue Registry Booster 2. It is approved by Microsoft to work with Windows Vista. It is not free though, but it is money well spent in my humble opinion.

Can you give a few examples of said bloatware and programs that don't need to run at startup that are present when you first start up?
