What do you guys do with the hard drive in a notebook when you get a full replacement from Dell? Do you send it to them with the old notebook or keep it?

Huh? If they're giving you a replacement under warranty, and you're sending the old one back, you can't cannibalize it for parts.
-
Just worried about data that's all. Just wondering what most people do.
-
do a low level format on it .... and then fill the drive up with zeros.
-
What I do, pack a few grams of thermite on it, put a small ribbon of magnesium, light it, and run like the dickens! All with a camcorder recording the whole scenario. Its a lot of fun and great laughs!

wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso

http://dban.sourceforge.net/
or you could use wearetheborg's suggestion. I do not know what that does though
dban: uses USA DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CERTIFIED erasing methods (goes over the hdd at least 3 times with a special hex code that leaves the least magnetic residual traces.)
boots from media and so you can erase the whole drive.
What to do with old hard drive?
