    What will I need to get my speakers to work with a 1520?

    Those should work fine, a stock Dell 1520 supports up to 7.1 surround.

    speaking of speakers...what are some recommended ones. and through what interface? i saw some usb ones on dell's site..and there was one that goes through the headphone jack.isnt it possible to connect my desktop speakers to a 1520? (it's 2.1). all ideas and help appreciated. what interfaces can i get to work with the 1520 and what comes with it?

    I've been wondering the same thing, but I'm concerned about the headphone interference (noise) issue. I'd think that if it's present with headphones, that'll translate over into speakers run the the HP jack, as well.

    It may not. For example on my desktop the onboard sound transmits a lot of noise from the motherboard to the headphones, but when I use speakers, no matter how loud, the sound noise doesn't transfer at all.

    Actually I've come across many people saying that the noise through the headphone jack is audible (or heard) only when making use of the headphones but not when connected to a speaker....

    Also for connecting a 2.1 speakers u can directly make use of the headphone jack.... But for 5.1 or 7.1 setups you would require the S/PDIF connector I presume.... The S/PDIF output can be obtained from the laptop by making use of the S/Video 7-pin to S/Video 4 pin + RCA Out + S/PDIF out adapter available from DELL.....
