What would you buy? the 13 7000 2 in 1 (Black) or 15 7000 2 in1 (Black)?

What would pick between these two? I am leaning towards the 15 for the replaceable ram, my friend says the 13 for the extra portability. Thoughts?

 

I don't think anyone can answer this for you as it really is your preference. I love the portability of my XPS 7390 2-in-1 and can take it anywhere. Having said that, the extra screen size of a 15" fits me better so to speak. I dislike the soldered components on the 7390 as well... I thought you wanted the XPS 17?

 

I am still undecided on the 17. I am on the road as we speak and I think the 17" would be just too big. My 13" is a great device for on the road. I am still weighing the pros and cons of the big device. I am also looking at the new 14 2 in 1 ryzen 5 for my wife. We are working at home. I figure, why spend x number of dollars on one computer for me, and she still have her little inspiron 11. She would love a nice bigger device too. So, there are alot of things at play right now. Might go with a xps 2 in 1 for both of us, but in reality, these 7000 series machines get us close. You should know by now I have device ADD. Until I pull the trigger, I go back and forth between a crap load of devices until I pull the trigger.

I know the ram on the 13 is soldered. The ram on the 15 is not (i think). I want to install 64gb into mine. Can you confirm? I know the ram on the 14 2 in 1 is not as well. So I can buy the cheaper 14 pull my ram from this device and install it in hers, and put the 8gb of ram into this machine for my son. There are juggling of a bunch of devices to move our businesses forward. So, her having a more powerful, larger machine will make it more comfortable for her to work effectively too. My son will retire his acer s3 and move to my current 2 in 1 dell.

Am I correct in the ram observations on the 15"? If they both soldered, I may go with the 13.

The XPS 13 has soldered ram I'd suggest making sure to get a 16GB model, it maxes out at 16GB. Unless you are a creative professional that's probably enough for a couple years at least. The XPS 15 has two DIMM slots, so you can upgrade that at your leisure up to 64GB, obviously you will want a pair to take advantage of dual channel.

I'm most curious about the XPS 17 myself. I REALLY LOVE my LG Gram 17. It has a better display option (1600p) than either of the XPS 17 choices in my opinion. 1200p is not enough and the 2400p might be a bit much for gaming at native res I'd have to get a much faster card for my eGPU than a OCed 2070 to keep the framerate up. I'm already planning on going higher end than another upper-mid tier card with what card I put into my eGPU next once the dust settles with nVidia and AMD's new cards later this year or early next year.

The Gram 17 is also only 2.96lb. The part that has be intrigued really is the better CPU and (subjectively) better keyboard on the XPS. I don't really care about the dGPU. I'd probably opt for an option without a dGPU and a touch screen to keep the weight down. I really don't think there's enough there to pull me away from the Gram 17 as it's doing everything I ask of it including gaming well at native res.

I'd take a hard look at the Gram 17 honestly unless you really need a subpar GPU on the go. That 2060 Max-Q in the XPS 17 is totally mismatched with the 2400p panel (for gaming anyway) and the 1200p panel is too low a resolution for desktop work IMO. eGPUs with high spec GPUs are more than enough especially at higher resolutions where games get GPU limited. The TB3 bandwidth hit is WAY less noticeable at higher resolutions. There's a sweet spot for it. I just really like being able to disconnect it when I'm not playing games and having a 3lb laptop with this kind of display panel.

 

I'm not talking about the xps devices here. The 7000s are all I'm talking about. I'm a wondering about the ram being soldered on the 15 7000 model.

I can't find any information on the 7590 2-in-1 outside of crucial listing it as having 2 ram slots and showing memory upgrade options. They are usually reliable in this regard so I would say it likely has replaceable memory...
