What's the difference b/w XPS & Vostro? And which one do you prefer?

I need something light for business, no games just business.

Design. The XPS looks better. The Vostro is the budget line of notebooks. What you get, ultimately depends on your budget. And according to your needs, the Vostro should be better :) XPS = Extreme Performance Systems = gaming != your needs.

but whats the actual difference apart from aesthetics?

why does the same spec (ddr2/ddr3 graphic card) apart cost so much more with XPS?

GPU difference: The XPS uses a gddr3 8600GT while the Vostro uses a gddr2 8600GT

    Because it's an XPS. Period.
Why do Alienware desktops cost more than equivalent custom built desktops ? (for example)
It's the brand name, can't really do much about it.

Vostro is an old design. Slightly bigger and heaver with no frills (the workhorse) of Dells line of business notebooks.

XPS is not only a newer design which makes it thinner and lighter and more stylish but it also caters to the "gamer" not business with better graphics.

The newer "business" model is called the Dell Precision M6300 with the FX Quatro graphics and a new small stylish case

There is not difference in the internal hardware. I prefer the Vostro just because I can apply the extra cash to the hardware and more bang for the buck. I just ordered a Vostro and had I gone with the Inspiron 1525 it would have cost $300 more for the same hardware. The Inspiron 1525 is a new design also slightly thinner and lighter and prettier.

    But the Business models are

    Vostro
    Latitude
    Precision

    Another example of design is

Vostro 1500 is the same computer as
Inspiron 1520 but the top of the lid is painted and you can pick the color

It depends on what you want.

By the way theres $500 off on Vostro systems over $1250. Thats why I just ordered one

17" desktop replacement. Just too big to take to school or work 7.71 lbs

15" Still big but can be lugged around 6.3 lbs

For thin and strong purpose, i think XPS M1330 and Latitude D4xx series are suitable

    thanks Jester,

I;m in the UK so it doesnt apply. but our prices on the Vostro have been lower than USA prices for a while. the $500 discount only makes it £50 cheaper compared to UK prices.

not really bothered about size, i'll take it into work everynow and again so i can use the software that is not allowed on my work Lenovo.

i hear the 1500 cpu whines in sleep mode or something (another thread) is it the same for the 1700?

My 1700 is pretty quiet in the HD, Southbridge and CPU department. I do hear the high frequency CPU morse code through the speakers/headphones but it's not intrusive when your doing things.

And on the whole business vs consumer line - you'll be offerered Vostro, Latitude, XPS and Inspiron if you go through Dell Small Business (at least on the UK site). Although obviously the Latitudes are aimed at business more due to the hardware involved as are XPS aimed towards gaming more. As Inspiron and Vostro are identical they sit just either side of the middle ground.

And an old design? The oldest Vostro in the World is only coming up on 9 months old now, he heh. Gotta love the speed of technology ;D

    Time for an upgrade! :D

But seriously, the oldest poorly equipped Vostro has a processor that's two generations old!

It wasn't the components that were being refered to - it was the design. :)

I said the design was old not the name

"The previous division was for home portables to be labeled Inspiron, and home desktop computers Dimension. Now, all home line computers, desktop or portable, are branded with the Inspiron label. The business version of that system receives the Vostro brand." Wiki

The difference was about $800 so I had to make a choice :nah:

No way I could justify the price for basically the same computer. It does have a slightly faster V-card and and may look slicker, OH...and the fingerprint reader lol. I'm not paying $800 more for that.
