    WAht is the difference between
    Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) [add $310 or $10/month1]
    Blu-ray / DVD / CD writer (Blu-ray Disc Drive) [add $510 or $16/month1]

Is any of these writable in Blu-ray.
What brand is it?...I can't imagine anything else than NEC for DVD+/-RW.

The more expensive drive is a Blu Ray burner.

Not sure on manufacturer (I don't have my 1720 with Blu Ray yet) but if I had to guess I would say Sony since they create Blu Ray. Once I have my machine (should be next week) I will see who made the one in mine.

BD-ROM designates the ability to burn Blu-Ray discs. The cheaper option only allows reading of the discs.

Actually, ROM means "read only memory" which means "not writable".

BD-ROM means the drive is read only. the more expensive one, that says "Blu-Ray / DVD / CD Writer" is the drive that will write all three formats.

A better question is whether the Blu-Ray writing support is single layer or dual layer.

I have a xps 410 that I picked up from outlet.

The driver is Philips. I think it is a blu-ray drive(write single layer, I believe).
System came with a blank disk.
