I ordered my E1705 last night:
- Intel® Core Duo Processor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB)
- 17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
- 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
- 256MB NVIDA® GeForce Go 7800
- 100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
I chose not to extend the warranty, but I'm not sure it was the right decision.
What are everyone's thoughts on the warranty? What is likely to go wrong in year 2 that is not likely to go wrong in year 1 or 3?

From what I've read about notebooks in general, the mechanical, non electronic parts. Clasps, latches, etc...
Dunno though, I'm in the same boat you're in.The only thing I've ever extended the warrenty on has been my flight controller for playing combat flight sims on. I abuse so many nuts, bolts, springs, clasps, buttons, and doohickies on that thing everytime I play, it seemed like a good idea... (haven't needed to replace anything on that yet, and it gets a good beating. i plan to be much nicer to my new laptop when it gets here.)
Perhaps I should have thought that out better. It's all learning curve for me right now.

I'd simply get the longest warranty you can afford / or matches the life of your computer. No sense getting a 4-year warranty if you're just gonna dump the laptop and get a new one in 2 years. I got the standard one year, because I'm cheap. On the other hand, I bought an extra year warranty on my Dell 24" monitor (total 4 years) because it was only $29 and I expect the monitor will still be pretty useful in 4 years.

I would go with a 1 or 2 year. Most problems occur in the first year, and if you want to extend your warranty later, you can always do that also.
There are other options like home insurance and stuff that will cover that.
What's the right warranty? E1705
