I'm curious to know about one of my partitions.

I did a clean install and deleted the 5-10 GB restore partition and the XP one and left the other one, but people keep saying it's 40 MB whereas my remainding non-XP partition is 78 MB with 71 MB free.

I assume it's related to the Dell Utility/MediaDirect things I keep reading about because after running the MediaDirect repair CD it worked again. I wondered why it's nearly twice as large on mine and why only circa 7 MB of it is being used.

    Any ideas?

Are you sure MediaDirect is working?. Cause it has it's own 1.5 GB partition that its located in the Restore partition (at least for me).

    It sure does.

After the removal of the restor partition and the format clean install of XP MCE, along with the installation of all the things I wanted on the laptop, I ran the MediaDirect repair CD, shut down the PC and pressed the MD button and it booted into Dell's MD. I didn't try it before running the repair CD.

I have the same ~ 78mb partition. Laptop is only just 1 month old. Wondering if it is different from other reports because of date of manufacture?
Place of manufacture? Mine was made in Ireland I do believe. Probably just a slightly different procedure used to load the hard drive, newer utilities perhaps?

A fellow 78 MBer! :) I'm in the UK and mine was from Ireland too.

I curious to know if all the space is needed as I'm thinking about getting Partition Magic and could use it to free up some of this unused space?

would you really notice that extra 70mb? But yeah, I'd be inclined to doe the same. Just a bit concerned about messin up media direct although from what I've read, it shouldn't do it any harm.
But would it affect the utilities contained in there? Now thats the question!
I might give it a go this weekend. Finally getting around to a fresh install!
If you try shrink it down before i get to, post back with results.

I know what your saying, I'm just particular about things like that. I would probably halve it max.

What other utilities are in there?

You'll probably get to do it before I do, as I haven't got Partition Magic yet.

Interesting.... Seems like the contents are approximately the same as mine ~40MB with about 7MB used. Guess they're planning ahead and reserving some space for future updates/capabilities????

I could probably shave about 20-30 MB off if needs be then, as that would match the size of it on the US Dells.
