Its the AUO. The XGA+ AUO. The glinty, sandy, olive oily covered, terrible, awful and miserable screen which... to see, according to these forums, is to stare into the abyss.
Two effects I didn't note, upon seeing it...
1) My sense of consumer entitlement wasn't hideously offended... I did not begin ranting to whomever would listen about how my glinty screen was glinty, and what a horror this was to behold... and how I had been prison raped by Dell... and how the ghost of Hitler must run that place now.. and how Dell had brought shame upon my family....
2) I did not have trouble looking at my screen... I did not feel sand and ground glass had been poured into my eyes, and how I just couldn't count how many frames I was getting in Counterstrike:Source cause I couldn't see through all the crap it looked like my screen was covered in.
I noticed it tho. I leaned in close to look at it. I leaned back. I wondered what glinty screen meant to my life... and opened a picture. No... couldn't tell. Leaned in very close. Noticed what I thought was "sparklyness" and leaned back again. Moved my head from side to side.. definately could tell if was... yes... quite sparkly glinty bits.... I was cursed.
I began to actually using my computer, and forgot about it for two hours... during a painfully long update install, I noticed it again... but I was staring at a screen didn't move for like... 10 minutes.. it took me ten minutes to be distracted by it... distracted from staring blankly at my computer installing 6 of 45, 7 of 45, 8 of 45... screw you Bill. Not exactly what I'd rate 'very distracting'
Before some of you say... "oh... your AUO screen must be 'one of the good ones', because if you could see mine... you'd freak!" I call BS. Before you post another picture of your hideous light bleed, or yellowed whites... look up color temperature, and adjust it, and realize that digital camera pics of the screen in the dark will try to expose for whatever they think you are taking a picture of.. which the camera will assume whatever is in the middle of the screen. Until camera's come with a 'panty-wadded LCD whiner' mode, they will produce overly dramatic exposures. And why is it so hard to actually capture on glintyness via a camera? Because it BARELY EXISTS AT ALL!!!
Heres my solution for the grainy screen problem. Lean back. If that doesn't work.. lean back more. If your still really angry about it... get up and walk away. Go look at clouds, old people, or something. See a movie. Gain some perspective on life. Make it a Merchant Ivory film you see... that way you will know what real pain is (from sitting through that crap for two hours) and your screen won't look so bad anymore.
Ok. That rant is a little harsh. I'm letting it stand though... because I think way too many grainy screen posts get started.. and people begin to freak out about buying one... or, like myself... worry for a week until their computer arrives about whether or not it will be cursed.. and they will be doomed to weeks of painful screen replacements, and attempts to communicate with tinglit tribesman in wherever Dell has farmed out support to... hours will be wasted, tears, gnashing of teeth... etc... etc..
Its not a big deal at all.. and I think those of you to whom it is a big deal have.. uh. politely said, been quite vocal about it... because real people probably don't make up a large portion of your lives, and your imaginary friends have become tired of hearing you whine about it... so you turn to the forums.
Think of me as.. the other side of the opinion on this issue![]()
Its as big of a deal as say.. oh... an ice cream headache. In fact... If I was given a cone of icy goodness and the promise of an LG screen replacement if I were to eat it too fast.. I'd have to think about that offer. Its that kind of 'no big deal'.

you are the first person i have ever rep'd
if i could rep you infinity, i would. -
It won't stop people from feeling entitled to perfection. In the end, people will do what they want to do, either keep the screen, call up Dell and calmly request a replacement, or gnash their collective teeth.

Your post is ridiculous. Compare your screen to a competitor. After all this is capitalism and we are consumers. There is a problem. It needs to be corrected, still.
Just wondering, but do you or a family member work for Dell? -
An entertaining read to be sure, but as for your point, I thoroughly disagree.

I held a similar position...until I began to really use the machine. That's when the screen issues became more apparent (particularly in word/visio/outlook...anything with a white background). A poor quality screen can cause eye fatigue...so while you may find it humorous to poke fun...the reality is there is functionality at stake as it's likely many are using these as business machines.
You wonder if "real people probably don't make up a large portion of your lives, and your imaginary friends have become tired of hearing you whine about it... so you turn to the forums".
I wonder if you willing to accept poor quality in your laptop...how much mediocrity you're willing to accept in the rest of your life? -
Well said
I think people whining about "grainy screen" have never seen anything but a CRT before. Those grains are called PIXELS

BEST POST EVER!!!

And all those of you who say it is the best post and need a realistic viewpoint probably never received a "bad" screen.
My screen would not display white - it was an off-white, looked like a fine mesh grid (like looking through a window or door screen), had terrible backlight bleed, and images just looked washed out. I've used / owned dozens of LCD screens over the years and never seen anything so terrible. Even my cheapy monitors at work are 10x better than these.
I don't think there's an unfair expectation that the screen look "normal". That's all I ask. And when I got my laptop, the screen was *not* normal.
The OP probably has a reasonably good screen, and has not seen a "bad" one. If it doesn't bother him, great, keep it. But don't undermine other people's issues. I agree some people made a huge deal out of it, but it is an issue. I don't know about you, but when I spend my hard earned money on a relatively expensive item, i want it to at least be "normal"....
All that being said, Dell does have a great exchange and return policy, so the griping was probably a little extreme. Just exchange or return it if you're not happy. No questions asked. -
I know what pixel structure on an LCD looks like now, as I have an sec4457 sitting in front of me with none of the "grain". At first, I thought it was pixel structure too that was causing the grain appearance on the AUO panels, in fact I think I flamed someone else too, saying it was the pixels they were seeing. Until I saw another 1400x900 screen without the AUO grain on an HP. I can see the pixel structure my sec4457 replacement if I put my nose in front of the screen, otherwise it has 0 grain. And yes, its far easier on the eyes when reading pdf files for more than 20 mins.

When I saw my Vostro 1500 screen I laughed...
