If i go with just 512mb, and buy more at newegg or something, will installing the 1 - 2 gb ram module(s) void my warranty? id hate to try and save $40 on a gig of ram only to find out that if i open up the 9300 my warranty is out the window...

No, upgrading your memory will not void your warranty.

The only thing about upgrading is that Dell does not cover the new hardware, so if by some odd chance you have a problem with the new memory, you will have to fix it. Also, Dell does not cover any problems covered by the new piece of hardware or any damage that might occur during installation. This is more for upgrades that require the complete case to be open.

I also recommend to keep your old memory in case you do have problems with your current memory. Dell might ask you to use your old hardware for testing purposes. I've never had this happen before, but I seen it recommended on Dell's website.

I bought a 1gb stick from newegg (Transcend Memory), and have had no problems with it or problems with my warranty. We have had several users buy memory from Newegg, and had positive experiences.

I, Too, Upgraded my RAm in my XPS-M170 with the Transcend memory with no problems. GREAT upgrade for half the cost.

Yeah, its really worthless to get everything from dell. Way over priced.
Hey, if you have a little computer skills, and some money on for upgrades from somewere other than dell, you save a lot. ;)

Ya, if you have empty slot (or want to take current piece out), upgrading to a load more of memory would be great. A nice 1GB stick would go well with an already equiped 512MB RAM (1 x 512 MB).

No adding ram will not void your warranty, adding ram is a fairly simple procedure, you just plug it in.
I bought the OCZ value ram, 1 gig stick, I have heard people report problems when using a kingston stick though I dont know what the cause is, Crucial, OCZ, Samsung and other known companies have great ram that will serve you just fine.
