I mean the mid range gateway has a 8800GTS available and the best dell offers is the weaker 8600GT. It's like they're trying to make people buy their most expensive laptops if you want a really good video card.

I know. They're always trying to screw the little guy over. But wait! Maybe, just maybe, Dell is bound by the laws of physics, and their laptop would melt if you put one of those in there.
I donno, maybe Dell doesn't have to follow the laws of physics. They're old and outdated anyways. -
Probably not in the 1530. Most likely the next version (1540 maybe) will have the 9600 or 9700 series which would be an upgrade over the current offering.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Dell has never put x800 or x900 series cards in their 15 inch laptops. Considering the form factor of the 1530, I highly doubt it is going to be an exception. An exception would be the m15x, but I hear it has/had some sort of cooling problem which seems to be characteristic of many Alienware machines.
Dell does offer 8800 cards in their 17 inch machine(s), but yeah, it's expensive. If you don't like it, just go get the Gateway. -

Thanks. When do you guys predict the M1540 or the next line of Dell 15'' laptops is going to see release? 8-12 months from now?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?

I will bet some time after montivinia?

Dell has stuck with the size of the screen as the first two numbers, then the following numbers for the series.
Like the D1505, then the D1520, then D1525 etc.
So if anything, the first two numbers will stay the same (15) and the following numbers will change to show the new series. -
Some desktops overheat with a 8800 and 120mm fans and they're like 12 inches thick! You want a one inch laptop with a 8800 in there with a 50mm fan?
-
Paying three thousand or more than two thousand dollars on a laptop is ridiculous anyway, especially for a 8800 series card. If you get that card in your laptop, you get an excessive amount of heat and weight, so your laptop pretty much is like a desktop, but you paid like 3x as much for equal performance. That's my opinion. I think the 8600M GT is perfectly suitable for a laptop that has good battery and low weight.
-
the 1530 is super slim, so an 8800 card will never fit in there...have u seen the alienware 15x ...the chasis is like double the 1530's height...like a 17" notebook..and it also weights like 7lbs...
-
I had the m15x and i would gladly welcome the size over my new sager NP5793 however Heating issues which caused it to down clock i didnt like. My new sager can comfortably play computer games underload and stay at a chilly 60-65 celcius where as my m15x would play computer games underload at 80-85 celcius take your pick.
I commend the power and size of the M1530 to even support 8600m GT a 256mb gddr3 card thats pretty awesome! I even considered it as an option, but once you play with a 8800m GTX you cant go back. However i do envy you m1530 bastards being able to carry it just about anywhere! Another thing how are the temps on playing games under load? especially load heavy games like crysis. -

His problem, is mine too. I'd much rather the 8800GTX in the alienware and future proof my system for the next few years but...price is problem.
Because if you really think about it, our lappies will only be able to play decent games at medium/high for the next 6-8 months. After that we're in CRYSIS land and games will be much more demanding. -
I get about 20-24 FPS on crysis. OC'd to 5300+ in 3dmark06 - VERY stable. Mainly because My laptop is right near the window and being cooled like a mofo + it's on a tripple fan chillpad. Temps never get above 78 in full crysis load. Makes for a "playable" game experience. All medium/high settings.

The 8600M GT isn't weak, and really isn't when you're talking about the 8600M GT GDDR3 that comes with the XPS M1530...
Crysis is a good example. Games aren't gonna start being as high spec as Crysis for years to come. So if the 8600M GT with GDDR3 can run it well, it oughta run just about anything well for a good 3 to maybe 4 years... its actually a good thing Dell offers this card, better than a lot of the laptops with the very low-end cards (GMA X3100=)

Desktop 8800 GPU's are way more powerful than notebook 8800m's.
Just fyi. -
I wouldn't call the 8600M GT low end though, especially when you're talking about laptops. Really the 8600M GT is a very good mobile card.
-
they were showing off a 16" at CES:
also about Crysis:
I managed to get everything on Medium at 800x600 (no AA or filtering) on my M1330's 8400 GS. And yeah ok it looked more like Far Cry than A REAL ALIEN INVASION but yeah.
My point is I can't see how anyone would need more than an 8600 right now.
When is dell going to offer(if ever) better graphic cards on their M1530?
