I'm getting ready to install Vista Ultimate 64Bit in my 1720 this weekend. When do you install the SATA Drivers, before or after you reforemat the Hard Drive.........................................

If AHCI is enabled in the BIOS, Vista will install the AHCI drivers itself. You can install the Matrix Storage Manager, after the installation, if you want to. Its a program, providing support for AHCI NCQ.

If AHCI is enabled in the BIOS the usual result is a blue screen (unless SP1 contains an MS ACHI driver and you have an SP1 disk). You'll need to install the AHCI driver via a USB key during Set-up. Hit F6 when it asks and provide the extracted driver files on a USB key.

^ That is relevant to the XP install, and not Vista....
Vista has all the intel AHCI driver files, and there is no need for external drivers.

I have Studio 1535 and we have the same AHCI problem

I can't install Vista ( non-SP1 ) with AHCI, I added the Matrix driver to my flash and tried to install it when vista shows the error but nothing change, I think I need another driver to load other than Intel Matrix Driver... or I should split-stream SP1 on my Vista

Vista has a native AHCI driver (irrespective of SP), but I don't understand why all Dell Users are complaining about AHCI.

OP: For Vista 64, download this, extract and copy contents to a flash drive/CD, and during the install, at the Load Drivers for HDD screen, install the driver iaAHCI.inf....

    Update:

I installed Vista Ultimate 64 Bit sp1 with AHCI and 4 gigs of ram and it went smooth as butta. Most of the 64 bit drivers was in the 64 bit DVD and the original Driver DVD that came with the Laptop. The only problem I had was getting the NVidia Driver to stick and locating the 64 Bit Driver for the X-Fi Audio Card.

    http://support.creative.com/Downloads/welcome.aspx

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, under manual selection, select Windows Vista 64. I am also using that external audio card for my 1720.

GeForce drivers, the best place to download a Vista x64 support is laptopvideo2go.

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Look at the right hand column which says Latest Drivers.

Here ya go. Enjoy your 64 bit support!

    Thanks for the links!
I am using the Video Driver from laptopvideo2go. I had to go to the Device Manager and use the update driver option, even then I had to force windows to use that driver. Any other way and I get a " Software not found for this device."
It's working as it should now.
