I am a student going away to college at the end of august and would like to have my Inspiron on hand before then. That being said I am in a bind as to if I should wait to order it and see if merom will actually be available in a laptop by that time (early-mid september AT THE LATEST). I would really like to have my laptop before the end of the summer and right now have a 35% off coupon that I would like to use that expires the 26th, the day before when Intel is supposed to announce something dealing with the next gen processors.
I feel like I could regret ordering it now if order and these laptops are suddenly available three weeks from today, and I also feel like I could regret not ordering now only to find out these laptops will not actually make market until october. I know theres the possibility of upgrading to merom later on but Im not sure how much of a hassle that will be with the price of the processor, voiding my warrenty, and the BIOS. I feel like im between a rock and a hardplace here.

buy when you need it and with the best deal. merom will be sweet, you're right, and have a small performance increase, but core duo's are just fine as well. i'd say use that 35% off coupon and buy now, and maybe get plenty of ram (aftermarket, it's waaaay cheaper, and no warranty-voiding). i can tell you that my e1705 performs beautifully and i won't be upgrading to merom because it's superpowerful as it is now.

hey fellow college student. I just want to give some advice about computers for college. I'm on my second year at UCSB and I just bought a dell 1505 due tot eh deals and such. the first year all i had was my desktop and I wished everday to have had a laptop. What i'm trying to say is if you are really into the 17 in screen, then get it but I would say get something smaller. I mean I found many cases where I wished I could pick up my computer and bike to teh library to finsh off my paper. Being able to bring you laptop places is quite nice in college. You never know how your roommate is going to be and you my need to get out of your room to study so think about it. In my case... my roommate slept really early i mean like at 10 while i sleep at 1am. It was hard to tpye knowing that he was trying to sleep so . yeah thats my advice ... good luck in college.

Thanks for the input guys, I think im going to wait until the night before my coupon expires to order, just to see if i can catch any sort of press release from intel or dell concerning release dates. Also, heyou87 thanks for the suggestion about the screen size but im really looking at this system as a desktop replacement. I really want that widescreen and the ability to take my machine home on the weekends and vacation with ease. It looks like i might pick up a dirt cheap old 14'' thinkpad for taking to classes just to take notes in word and flash drive documents to my E1705.

Just a quick question, why is everyone so keen to buy Dell E1xxx series laptops, is it only me that thinks they are asthetically lacking to the point of verging on ugly???
-
Since so many people have 6000's or E-series, it's easy to post questions about them and get rapid answers. -
You must be lucky in the states cos in the UK dell arent really that good value, and i thought that only their business line of notebooks had any build quality to write home about.

Hey what major are you? I go to ucsb too. I'm a 4th year and i feel the same way. Going to the library with my laptop is a lot better than my huge desktop.
When to buy Inspiron E1705?
