    What exactly happens?

The resolution must change...because my entire desktop changes. I have icons set to specific areas..and they are moved every time I latch down.

Ya, apparently it does, and I heard the only way to fix it is to make it so that your LCD doesn't turn off with the lid closed...so it's kind of a trade off. If you want to know how to do that, I can go and find the instructions for you.

My screen is set to turn off when you close it, without activating standby, hibernation or shut down, and my desktop icons don't move (it's set to the highest resolution and I have icons that go along the far top, bottom, left, and right edges).

Try disabling LCD Panel Expansion in the BIOS. Works here, and hopefully will work for you too.

I have noticed this with my 9300 only recently. When I first got my computer I did not have this problem but about a month ago I had to format my hardrive and reinstall everything and this started happening. I updated a few of the Dell programs and drivers to the newest versions and I'm thinking that the problem may be in the new programs (my first guess is Quickset). I'm going to see if I still have the older versions of these programs and see if I can locate the offending program.

OK, good news and bad news. The good news is that I have identified the offending program. The bad news is that it is the latest version of the nVidia GeForce Go drivers. I unistalled the v.84.30 drivers and then installed the older v.6.14.10.7851 drivers. Now all my icons stay in place when I close the lid. I am going to try to contact Dell and report the bug. Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to go about this?

If what you want is the system to not go into the standby mode when you close the lid, it is under the Power Options in the control panel. Then choose the advanced tab. The is a selection box that lets you choose standby or do nothing.

Haha, I been waiting so long for someone to share my problem. My 15.4 at 1680x1050 does that too. Except mine is a ati graphics card. I am beginning to think that its only the high resolution that do this. I also have a 9300 but its at 1440 resolution and doesnt have any problem. I am guessing, on a 15.4 1280 resolution, there is not problem.

    Hello CvcDrk!

    jcaulley beat me to it:
I have "When I close the lid of my portable computer" set to "Do nothing" and this turns my screen off when it's closed/nearly all the way down without affecting the notebook's state.

I posted this info in another thread here, but the fix (for most people), is a registry edit:

The solution is to modify LidBehavior registry value in nvidia card registry key from 0x11 to 0x10:
    1. Open registry editor (Run->regedit)
    2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video registry key
There are several subkeys composed of random hexadecimal numbers. Each of those subkeys have its own subkeys 0000 and 0001. Find the key corresponding to the nvidia card. This is the key whose 0000 and 0001 subkeys contain a lot of values (such as individual games settings etc)
    3. In 0000 subkey, find LidBehavior value. On my system, its default value is 11 (hexadecimal). Change it to 10 (hexadecimal)
    4. Reboot

Hope it works for you. It did for me on my M1710!!

Awesome post lancorp. Worked like a charm on my 9300. Glad you posted that because I spent the last 2 hours searching the registry looking for that and hadn't found it yet. All my icons stay in place now.

When i close the lid on my E1405 the resoliution changes and the icons move as well. I find this to be one of, if not the most annoying problems i've encountered. I have a fresh install, latest Dell supplied drivers, and still i have this issue. I really love this notebook, but it's just about enough to make me send it back. I am sick or moving icons and resizing windows every time i close the lid. I can't beleive how many people have this problem with no official fix from Dell.

Anyone have a fix for this on my particular model?

Same thing for my e1505. when i close the lid(set on screen going blank) after a while, i open the lid up the resolution totally changes. It is like a letterbox screen (black bars on both sides) and it is zoomed in for a reason. When i go to sides of the screen i can move it up/down and left/right to see the rest of my screen. To fix my problem i have to but in on the standby and turn it back on. I talked to dell and they have no clue but to just reinstall the drivers (dell's default answer too everything!!!!!!!!!). Hoping someone can help me fix it without turning it off and on again. Thanks.
