Do you mean like little smudge type things all over the screen? I notice something to that effect when I look close....when I play games it's not there - or maybe im not looking close enough

Thats kind of how mine is right now. When the tech did my first replacement he said it was 'normal'.

This is bull****. I have an inspiron right next to my 1530 and the inspiron looks 10x better with no weird smudginess in the background. Does getting your screen replaced fix the problem?

My screen replacement was a little better than the first, but it still has that grainy-look. I told the tech that my sisters inspiron 1501 lcd looked a lot better than mine and he said it was because they are different types of screens [like not manufacturers, but the build or whatever]..

[btw both my first and replacement screens were samsung]

So there's no thin screen plastic they have on or anything? It's "supposed" to be like that?

so what exactly is graininess? what is "smudge type things"?

i look at my xps, and it looks fine - it's not massively bright/clear, but i didn't expect it to be (no laptop i've seen has a really brilliant screen...)

It doesn't really bother me, but when I'm looking at white especially I see these type of smudges all over. It's really hard to explain but that's the best way to explain it. Little marks all over, you'll just notice it when you look at white.

so why is it called "graininess"/"grainyness"?? that implies grains, or granules - i'm expecting to see little dots everywhere!

I think there are 2 types of "grainyness" that people refer to. First there are the diagonal lines that are visible with very dark or very light screens and you can physically feel them as you move your finger across the screen. The other type is a dirtyness where the screens whites appear to be sandyish and have a slight grey hue to them.

I literally see little faint blue/gray grains interspersed within a white area. Also, the screen at max brightness is pretty dull. My XPS at full brightness is like my old vaio at half brightness...

There's actually a third type, that I think occurs more often than the first two. It's a phenomenon called pseudo-graininess and comes from reading the forums too much.

Could any of you please make a picture of it next to your comparison screen?

It is very hard if not impossible to get a good picture of it. Its obvious in real life though. If its not painfully obvious, your screen is fine.
