I am not sure if other model has that, but D600 power management has that button. I doubt it is the little push button next to the volume adjustment buttons, because there are three power setups like:

    1) "when I close the lid..." which means the little push button is pressed and held down b y the lid.

    2) "when I press the power button..." which means the main big power button.

    3) "when I press the sleep button..." which means ??? Or does it mean the same button as in 1) but just press and let go, not press and hold?

    Dear Dell4me,
I am no expert -just recently got 700M - see other posts of me bothering the readers. My 700m does not have the "sleep" button. All controls for extending battery performance are tied into the XP system itself. THERE is a FN and STANDBY function that puts my 700m to Hibernation mode.
Of course, you know that you can access the above via the Control panel and then Performance&Maint. Or when you Shut Down you get the option of putting the laptop in Standby mode also. This puts you into a low-power mode only.

Sorry if I made an issue more complex that it is. My hopes for others to come to the rescue.

The sleep button is actually Fn+Esc.
