folks, just got the track # of my customized d820 which was ordered 2days ago. according to the tracking detail on the ups site, it seemed my laptpo was originally shipped from NASHVILLE, TN, US.
here the problem comes. is it brand new??? some friends told me that all of new dell laptops sold in the us are assembled in malaysia or china, so mine is supposed to be shipped from there originally.

    many thanks, guys!

It ships from Malaysia to Nashville, thats the "boxing" stage, then from nashville to its final destination.

My outlet systems shipped from Texas. You will never recieve an imported product directly from the country of origin, it gets shipped here, goes through customs, then to a distribution center, then out to you, no worries.

    Hi,

I'm from Germany and mine was shipped from Limerick, Ireland. As far as I know, there is also the factory where ist was built. Are you sure that yours in the US are built in Malaysia? Don't they have a factory in the US?

I guess, "only" the barebones are produced in far east, but equipment with processor, graphics and stuff is done near your location, don't you think so?

I am not so sure that they are shipped from Malaysia to Nashville. Now my 1505 was shipped from Nashville. I also have a good friend that lives in Nashville...ordered a 1405. Paid for ground shipping and received it the next day...fully configured...from Nashville. If it had to come from Malaysia first...I think it would have taken his much longer to arrive. Ordered mine on a Tuesday and had it the Friday of the same week...

    It comes from malaysia!

look at the bottom, it says "Made in Malaysia"

outsourcing is what keeps the company alive.

I think that the single parts are manufactered in Malaysia, like Mainboard, chassis etc., but final assembly is done in Nashville, Limerick, or whatever the nearest site is.
    Or am I wrong?

Dell did not outsource to Malaysia. They have a big manufacturing facility in Malaysia that assembles high end notebooks, desktops and servers (parts are sourced globally though). It's still operated and managed by Dell Asia-Pacific, also based in Malaysia.
