I ran into the top of my budget, dell finance credit, so I had to cut back somethings so I can get them elsewhere or buy them seperately.
Similar to my XP Home question, kinda/sorta:
I ordered 512mb with the machine. I realize that's nowhere near enough.
I can buy the 2 gigs (2 of each 1 gig) from Dell:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=A0612534
2 gigs = 359.9 from Dell
Or:
I can buy the 2 gigs from Crucial:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...=Dell&tabid=AM&model=Inspiron+E1705&submit=Go
$255.99 = 2 gigs 5300
It's about a $100 difference. Is it safer to get the memory from Dell or is Crucial just fine? I plan on getting the Dell extended warranty that covers accidents too -- which makes me wonder if I have to buy Dell's RAM to keep it within warranty?![]()
This is the notebook I ordered from Dell:
Inspiron E1705 - Intel(r) CoreTM Duo Proc T2500 (2GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2
Cache), Genuine Windows(r) XP Home Edition
512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display
256MB NVIDIA(r) GeForceTM Go 7900 GS
60GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Integrated Sound Blaster(r) AudigyTM HD Software Edition
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps)
Don't worry, this is my last topic for awhile. Just didn't want to confuse any thread with two different questions.![]()

77.99-10 = 67.99 x 2 =135.98 +9.98 shipping = Grand total of 145.96... Saving of 213.94 #1 reason not to buy ram from dell!
would help if i actually answer your questio lol! yes it should be fine if your ram is DOA newegg will renew it. my current 2GB is from my ACER 8204 lol.. and my acer has my 1GB. It doesn't void the warranty nor does it apply to it. I believe they have a database with the original computer spec for your laptop and if something happens they will base it on that. but 213.94$ of saving... dude when you get your new laptop use that money for ram lol by then you'll probably get 4GB! -
Wow. Thank you. This forum is great!
How did you figure out that RAM will work with my specific notebook?
Just curious. -
Magic! or knowledge
.
512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz <- ram
actually your motherboard is design to use both:
DDR2-533 AKA PC4700 (If I recall correctly)
&
DDR2-677 AKA PC5300 (I'm absolutely sure but there is some 677 recall themselves as PC5400. )
so either will work.
lmao...again it would help if i answer your question! RAM is supported by the motherboard therefore your E1705 If i recall uses the Mobile Intel® 945PM Express Chipset...
Inspiron E1705 - Intel(r) CoreTM Duo Proc T2500 (2GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2
Cache)
http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945pm/index.htm
with a 667MHz of FSB ! a correlation! DDR2-667! matches with your CPU front side bus! haha
533MHz will work too but it would be a tab bit slower which you won't notice... only if you benchmark and the score might be off by xx. any lesser or higher won't work tho -
BTW: Does it always take Dell about 3 weeks to setup a notebook? Did they give me a August 21st ship date as the latest possible time or will it likely take that long?
Thank you. -
nope probably shorter... my Cousin E1405 took them 1 Week! on the other hand her acc. took them 4 weeks -.-... I think the ETA is for the worst possible. My XPS was said to arrive in 3 weeks but arrive in about 1.5
!
-
Very exciting. You know your stuff.
I'm curious, is the extended warranty with the accident prevention worth getting (covers spills and drops, etc.). If so, how many years do you recommend I get it for?
Thank you. -
Actually it's my turn with the questioning
! where did you order your laptop at? through home/business? and what was your total?
-
Accident Prevention is absolutely worth it! I heard someone with a old dell 700m got it replace with a brand spanking new XPS 1210! because of it! it protects from thief, accident, etc. That is not cover by your warrant. BUT! is it cost 107$... but depending on your Hardware warranty you order... it's base off that year.
Example: If you order your laptop with only 1 year hard ware warranty... your 107$ isn't gonna do much. With 4 year tho? and 107$? it's a investment worth taking! -

The Dell E1705 takes DDR2-667 (PC5300) memory - Newegg has a ton of them:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&description=&srchInDesc=&minPrice=&maxPrice= -
So I should go for the 4 year warranty? Will the notebook last me that long?

sry was afk but depends... what kind of environment you'll be working in. with 4 years even if you accident *cough* break it anytime you can get a complete replacement... with 1 year hardware warranty it's not gona last long... depends on you probably going to get a new laptop by then or not? is this an investment?
-
I run a GSP so I use it for games as well. It depends on how much uptime I can get with a notebook. Can you just leave them up and running 24/7 for server monitoring software? Or do they need to be shut down often due to heat, etc.?
-
Total Price $1,475.63 that is actually pretty decent price but i'll tell you what! you should call dell and add the 4 year warranty support and 4 year accidental.
I'm considering this as an investment. And ask them what's the total on your laptop going to be? then try it with 3 year. if it's over 2K then go ahead and cancel the order and order one through EPP.
the grand total for 4 year warranty+complete care + your specs and a lil bonus was $1,926.44 w/ tax
You got a pretty good deal for the price you paid too btw.

I would get a laptop cool http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4635868#detailed 12.99$ free shippy
would be pretty good if your gonna leave it on for 24/7. 24/7 monitoring won't be that big of deal because the CPU will slow down and run slower if it isn't stress monitoring.
Once again tho... it should run fine now days because our tech. has gotten a lot better. Laptop are design to run on their own thermal systems... it isn't like the old days with the P4's.
I use to own a Acer 8204 w/ 2.0GHz/X1600/15.4/120GB/2GB RAM was around 2.3K when i brought ><! and i let it ran for 24/7 alone on it's single cooling system.
I notice the E1705 has dual or two fan on the motherboard so it should be fine.
laptop cooling is just a bonus! but not a must! -
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread111042.html
has some pretty neat tools and "Fangui I9K 2.2.2 Added 11/29
This is a wonderful program that monitors temperatures and gives you direct control over your fans in your Dell notebook. Features include custom temperature levels and active temperature displays amongst other things. This is IMO a requirement for all 17 Inch notebook owners." is highly recommanded! at least to fool around
-
Thank you. Which brand of memory should I get? Any suggestions?
-
The problem is the dell finance card thing is only $1500 limit. So I had to use that or another CC, you can't combine them. That's why I'm getting the memory via separate order. I used a coupon code I found in google -- I think it lead to this site -- that gave me almost $400 off.
How much is the 4 year warranty and complete care if I order that after I get my notebook? -
Employee purchase Program. well from 1 year to 4 year hardware warranty it's about 310$. and for the complete care your looking at another 107$ so about 417$ +tax or whatever they're planning to charge. I'm not sure if you can order it after you get your notebook. call dell and ask and if they denied say you threaten them that you will return and don't want to go through the hassle. I think you can return the notebook in 30 days.

I'm off to do some community service haha! hope some other ppls at NBF could help ya out! Best of luck to ya! -
Yah, they let you purchase after the fact. Isn't EPP illegal to use unless you're an actual employee?
-
nope i'm a student tho ^-^
-
Ah, you can use EPP if you are a student?
