All of them?
I see options for:
a) 250 GB 5400 rpm
b) 160 GB 7200 rpm
c) 200 GB 7200 rpm
I was tempted to go with (c), but quiet is a big deal to me.
Has anyone with a loud drive attempted to use Hitachi or SMART tuning software to adjust the acoustic parameters?
Thanks.

The 320GB (5400rpm) HDD used in mine is very quiet and only 5-10% slower than my friends 7200rpm using HD Tune. I would highly reccomend this drive. Because of the structural integrity of the 1530, i believe a 7200rpm HDD would be loud, so be careful when making a decision.

My 160GB 7200RPM is pretty quiet. When I'm installing new apps, it does get a little bit warm though.

I also have 7200 HD 160GB I don't hear it at all.

ditto with the 200gb 7200rpm version (well, i do hear it, but it's not "loud"!).

I think a lot depends on the manufacturer (model) too. Because my previous Hitachi 120GB 5400RPM was louder and slower than current Segate 120GB 5400RPM. Generally, DELL doesn’t stick with one manufacturer for one size/RPM disk, they’ll send whatever brand available in their inventory at the time of assembling.

I have the 160gb 7200rpm. It's relatively guiet. I just hear the occasional chirping(not sure how else to describe it) out of it. Nothing out of the ordinary though.

never heard a loud laptop hdd in my life. people who have been complaining about noises most likely had their years next to the notebook. it wont bother you unless you lived in a vacuum in deep space.
Which 1530 hard drives are loud?
