Looking for a replacement for E1705, which 17" Dell is a good upgrade?

Not looking for gaming, just generic usage.

They're mostly 16" now to fit the 16:9 standard. Have you looked at the Vostro or Latitudes? Business laptops are great for general office use if you want durability and reliability, but don't need any fancy features.

I'm a fan of the Inspiron 17 myself for the new styling (it makes the studio systems look dated) :p

The only 17" models in the business lineup are the Vostro 3700, and the Precision M6500, unless I'm totally missing something.

They are, hence the "mostly 16." There are a lot more interesting systems to be looked at if 16" models are considered too.

Since I'm considering the same question (which 17" Dell), I'm looking at the Vostro 3700. Is that machine worth the extra money over the Studio 17, or is there a compelling reason to chose the Studio over the Vostro? I would be using it for software development, Photoshop, and similar tasks. Not buying it for gaming.

The Vostro is designed for small businesses, which means it will be a little better quality than consumer models (looks like it has an aluminum case).

For starters, Dell only has 2 16" systems, the XPS16 and the Latitude Z. There are a quite a few 17" systems including the Inspiron, Studio, Precision and Vostro models.

In my experience the Vostro line has been hit or miss. If I were looking at a replacement for the 1705 the Inspiron 17 would be high on my list. If you could get a good price on the Studio it would be a great option. The Precision is my favorite 17" Dell system though.
