    Which Card is Dell going to use to replace my busted 7900GS?

    My NVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS has just failed in my Inspiron 9400 a few days ago and Dell is sending out a tech to replace it. Problem is, is that when
    I bought this laptop back in February 2006 it originally came with the GeForce Go 7800, the 7900 card was an upgrade that I purchased myself from Dell spare parts in October last year(it only had a 90 day warranty).
    So because the 90 day warranty is up on my 7900 card Dell tech support told me that since the 7800 card can be the only card covered by my 3 year complete care warranty the tech being dispatched will come out with a 7800 Go card to replace my busted Go 7900 GS. Do you guys think this makes any sense? First of all, I thought that there were no more refurbished 7800 cards even left!!!!

    What are the chances that the support tech did not know what he was talking about and the tech being dispatched will be showing up with a 7900 GS anyways?

    Just pray it's not a ATI. I doubt they will replace it w/ GTX since you have to modify the bottom housing to fit the second heat pipe.

    If you log on to your account, you should be able to tell what part Dell is sending to the field tech though.

    Oh if you bought the GS from Dell, it should carry your system warranty, not the 90 day - assuming the system waranty is longer.

    Thanks for your quick reply, I told the support tech that my system warranty should still cover the 7900 GS (I still have over a year left on my complete care) but he told me that was not true that the system warranty cannot cover the 7900 card... is there a link somewhere on Dell's website which I can show them as proof? Also does this rule apply to Canadian owners (I'm in Canada). Should I contact the sales department to see those are the rules here in Canada?

    I have the similar situation, but my warranty had expired. I need to send the laptop in and pay for $199 for service fee. Wondering Dell would replace the AtI x1400 since 7800 go was long gone? I have the 7800 go.

    Can I insist replacement must be at least equal to the original card? My CC company pay for the repair since I use them to pay for the laptop at year ago.


    Can someone tell me?

    I was told by US Gold Tech support, and sorry, I don't have anything to back this up.

    I also read alot about this matter and was told that what I said is true atleast in the US.

    Why don't to call spare parts and ask them?

    I asked my tech because I was thinking about upgrading my M90, and was told that as long as I can prove the parts were bought from Dell, it would carry over my original systems warranty - If there was no such benefits like this, no one in right mind would purchase from over priced Dell Spare Parts.

    T7400 was 1k from Dell Spare parts when I checked, and T7200 was SAME PRICE.

    You said it yourself.... 7900 card that you bought has 90 day warranty.

    Your Inspiron 9400 (and everything in it) came with 3-year complete care.

    How does not make sense? If I decide to pop in a 250GB hard drive in my Vostro that I purchase from Dell parts, do you think it should be covered by the same warranty that my laptop has? i.e. whatever I can shove into the case has GOT to be covered by the laptop warranty, right? Noooo!

    Well...My confusion came from the fact that other members not just on this website but also over at notebookforums.com that also bought a 7900GS card
    from Dell spare parts with a supposed "90 day warranty" were told later on by these same Dell people that their leftover system warranty could be used to cover the card i.e. if your system had no warranty leftover then you would have 90 days and that's it HOWEVER if you still had say 1 year left on your laptop it could be used to carry over to protect the card also, now unless all those posters were making that story up I don't doubt what they said they were told by Dell was true!

    If you used major credit card to do the graphic card purchase, warranty is automatic double!

    Perhaps it is time to pop the 7800 go back to the laptop and have your fingers cross to wish for the card to fail ,then, Dell have to replace the card under 3-years warranty.

    So, the technician came with a 7800 go? I thought they were long gone!

    I did purchase the 7900 GS with a credit card (i'll look into that whole double warranty issue thanks for that piece of advice) The tech has not shown up yet he's suppose to call latest Tuesday to set up an appointment, that whole finger crossing thing sounds like a cool idea ;)

    Many people w/ experience will tell you what I said.

    Like I said before, I was even told by US Dell support that upgrade parts bought from Dell will carry the original system warranty.

    Had lot of spare time - Gold tech support wait was less than 30 seconds.

    Anyhow, not a great answer by the guy but the main quote was

    Agent (GTSR xxxx): "Depending on the part, it either will have a 3 year warranty, or the length of the warranty for the system, which ever is longer, but you will want to verify that with spare parts as certain parts may carry a shorter warranty."

    And when I called Spare parts last time on CPU/GPU upgrades, they did tell me that as long as I keep the receipt, the parts would carry my systems 3yr Complete Care w/ it.

    This is US though.

    Thanks man I posted the same question over at notebookforums about this and got the same answer that you gave me from 2 of their top guys at notebookforums so I'll give Dell a call on Monday, again thanks to all those that helped me in this thread unlike some others who like to spew their opinions on an issue they obviously have no understanding about :p
