I assume that SNO stands for Sony Nec OptiArc, the loud one. Try to get it replaced!

No, I've just heard reports that Optiarcs are loud. As you can see in my sig, I changed to the "dark side of the force." lol.

My service tag shows the exact same thing (K937 ASSEMBLY..., DVD+/-RW..., 8, SLOT, 1530, SNO) and my M1530 does indeed have the Optiarc drive that many complain about.

Yeah, you know it has a CLUNK to it. It doesn't particularly bother me, but I can see where it might bother someone. It only does this when actually loading or ejecting a disk (or mine does anyway), it's not particularly loud in general operation. If it's something that annoys you, I imagine Dell will swap that out. It's not worth it to me to have some meat-fisted tech rip apart my otherwise perfect XPS. Maybe later on after I've abused it enough myself I'll call and complain about it.

    As always, YMMV.

Yeah. I have the Optiarc, and it's considerably noisy when loading and ejecting. However, I've never had a read/write error with it. If I ever do, though, I have a special case number where I can get the Panasonic drive. Dell was pretty lenient with getting me a new Optical drive if I wanted one. I might eventually, but for now I can sacrifice some quiet for something that reads/writes silently and flawlessly.

That's my plan... if they screw it up enough (cuz to replace the drive they'd have to mess with my perfect palmrest and WSXGA+ LG screen...) so I'll wait to replace the drive til it's already somewhat messy, and if they screw it up bad enough I'll fight for a new one.

It doesn't scream like a banshee. It actually shouts, "LEEEROOOOYYYY JENKINNNSSSS!!!!" repeatedly while it runs.
