I use the bluetooth remote with my 1210...pretty sweet. Sometimes takes a button push to get it turned on, but you don't have to worry about aiming.

The IR is nice because it doesn't eat your battery or stick out at all like the Bluetooth.

I have the bluetooth one (It's NOT a Dell Remote, it's made by Interlink and is sold as a separate pheripheral), and while it's nice and functional, the fact that it sticks out would definitely make me prefer the IR one. I have tried a laptop in bag with it, and it does not stay in the Express Card slot.
