Hello, I am doing some research for a friend who is looking @ the Dell 1150 currently available at dell.ca. it's an amazing deal but will it be good enough for burning dvd's? or would the 5160 or 600m be better choices?

i am really not sure on this one, but i am completely guessing that you would get a better buy out of the 5160 or 600m. I'm not sure, because i just installed a dvd burner in my desktop and (well, i havent tried it yet), but i'm sure it will work fine as my cd burner did (and plus its a dell dimension 8250) and it only has 2.4 ghz p4 (without HT). the 5160 has the HT advantage for multitasking, so i guess that might help, plus a 533 mhz fsb, but then again the 600m has a dothan 2 mb cache and up to like 2 or 2.1 ghz, which would do fine for dvd burning. Personally, i would go with the 600m, for all its other advantages (mobility, gaming) but if your friend doesnt plan to move around alot go with the 5160. There are more factors though. I'm also guessing hard drive speed contributes to it, and the 600m doesnt have a 7200 rpm HD, while the 5160 does. Then again, Dell themselves do say the 600m is 31 % lighter than the 600m. It all depends on what's needed and how much money he/she's willing to spend.

I'm offering my 2 cents on everything else tonite, so why not this...
I use a Latitude D505 at work with an external Sony DVD writer (510 I believe). When burning DVD's the laptop becomes almost unusable when it reaches the writing phase.
Exact setup is XP Pro, with 512 RAM and a 1.4 M processor. I usually go use someone elses computer while I'm burning DVD's. Not sure if its a monster that I have somehow created myself or if a laptop is just not the best thing to use for that purpose.
My first thought would be to stay away from the lower end models for DVD burning and stick to a desktop replacement.
I'm sure there are smarter people than me in this group that could offer better info. -
I would get the 5160. I have a Inspiron 1150 and it is ok; however my friend has a 5160 also, with a DVD burner; and it runs much faster. This is probably due to the Pentium 4 processor being able to process the information much quicker. If you are going to be doing a lot of DVD burning I would get the 5160.
