Which Dell notebooks have scrolling touch pads?

Anyone know which Dell notebooks have scrolling touch pads?

I want to buy a medium-price Inspiron, but I really want the scrolling touch pad. I have seen some scrolling touch pads on Dell laptops, but can't remember the specific models. The funny thing is: when I ask Dell reps (3 occasions now) which laptops have the scrolling pad, they keep telling me none have it. But I've seen it, so I now some have it!

If someone has a better suggestion than Dell, please let me know.

The 9300 has one and so does the XPS line up does also. I think the 6000 but im not sure.

 

I'm pretty sure they all do...

Because my Dell Latitude LS400(Pentium II 398mhz, 64mb ram, 6gb HD can use scroll at the right side of the touchpad...

I'm pretty sure you just need to install a Synaptics driver which will 'create' that space..

Does that mean that virtually any touch pad could be made into scrolling just with a correct driver?

 

The Synaptics touchpad drivers will work will all touchpads manufactured by Synaptics. I believe that all Dell touchpads are made by them.

If the touchpad has a scrollpad, you should see it on the side of the touchpad - either a line or a series of arrows going up and down. That designates the scroll pad zone.

 

Well, the Dell laptops don't have the scrollpad outlined, at least not on their web site pics. However, if they are using Synaptics touch pads, then scrolling sounds like an option? Or is scrolling only available on specific Synaptics touch pads?

Maybe in order to save money, Dell is using OEM touch pads that won't allow scrolling?

I understand about the software and it seems like it should be easy to program any touch pad to scroll if you can assign a certain area to scrolling. I'm just worried that Dell has cut a corner and the touch pad may not support the drivers.

 

That's interesting - nearly all of the touchpads I have seen with a scrollpad have it outlined on the right side. Check the many reviews of the i9300 on this site and see if they have scrollpads. I was not aware that Dell had them on their notebooks. It is a useful feature if you are stuck without your mouse.

 

Yeah, on "Notebook Review" picture the i9300 clearly has the scrolling area outlined on the touchpad. However, if you go to the Dell web site, the pic does not show the scrolling area.

I just chatted online with another Dell rep and this one says the Inspiron 2200 DOES have virtual scrolling on a Synaptics touchpad. Honestly though, I don't think Dell's people are very knowledgeable. I get a different answer every time I ask, LOL.

 

My LS400 does not have an area outlined, but still works. It's just a area of a grey square.

 

My notebook also don't have the area outlined, but it works, by just touching where the area should be... and Synaptics is the main touchpad provider for most laptops. And, in the generic Synaptics driver, the option of the vrtical scrolling is there. All touchpads that can detect where you are touching will be able to utlize that function, and which touchpad does not know where you are touching?

 

Some Dell's touchpads are made by Alps instead of Synaptics, like on the 600m and D600 (dunno about the newer D610).

Touchpad scrolling can be enabled/disabled in the touchpad/mouse settings as long as you have the driver installed (which on Dell's would be preinstalled for you along with Windows and all the other drivers).

I haven't used that many laptops so I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking all touchpads in laptops for the last several years have had scrolling, but that the option was disabled in the driver setting by default and that most users just never went around fiddling with settings to know what features were available. I know it was months before I knew my girlfriend's 600m could be set for scrolling.

 

all the inspirons have scrolling. don't know about the latitudes.

 

Well, I ordered the Inspiron 2200, after reading reviews where folks talked about liking the scrolling feature on the touchpad.

Man, I think the 2200 is a helluva deal. This is for business and casual use, NOT gaming.

I bought my 700m during the $750 off $1500 deals this summer.

I used to think that it didn't have scrolling, but one day i just somehow tried it and it works. Even though it is not marked, it is definitely a scroll pad.
