I need some help deciding which notebook to get.
My spending limit is about $1300-1400. I would like to keep it below $1200 ideally, but I would stretch it to 1400 if the package is right.
What I essentially want out of my notebook is
1) Excellent screen (prefferably WUXGA, and no less than WSXGA)
2) Reasonably Fast
3) Good RAM
4) Solid overall package -- business and personal use
Basically the screen and speed are my ultimate essentials.
Which notebook would best suite me for my price range and basic and specific needs?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

First off its not a good idea to cross post, it becomes difficult for others to respond, one post is more than enough.
Also what do you plan on using the notebook for? This is the most important info as without knowing what you want to do with the notebook it is hard to offer decent advice?
For eg the 9300 is definitely a DTR thus I would only suggest this if your not planning on traveling with this notebook.
The 6000 is also reasonably heavy but will be better suited to traveling to from work etc.
Given that you want to keep price down I would look at the 6000, you will be able to spec a faster machine for much less than the 9300. Also the 6000 has 30% off at the moment compared to 20% on the 9300 thus I think this represents the better deal. For Ram I would look to buy elsewhere eg crucical as they offer much cheaper prices.

Hi Nikos,
welcome to the forum. I went ahead and deleted your other two posts as crossposting is not allowed and this is the particular forum this question belongs in. I'm not very familiar with the different Dell designs however I'm currently working on a review of the i6000, that will be up in the next couple of weeks I hope. there are plenty of Dell users around here that will be helpping you soon I sure.

If you want to get the WUGA+ screen, then I highly suggest getting the 9300 since weight isn't a factor for you. That was the one I initially wanted but ended up getting the 6000 because it was cheaper. The native resolution of the WUGA+ screen is 1900x1200 which makes the font very small. If you attempt to set it to anything higher, it would defeat the purpose of getting such a nice screen since it won't be as clear. The 17" screen on the 9300 would greatly help in this case since it will still be at its native resolution but the font will be bigger.
The way I see it is the 6000 is a smaller brother of the 9300. Both are pretty much the same computer except you sacrifice a little bit of power and options for a few lighter pounds in the 6000. -
I still say go the 6000, with WSXGA res screen. I have one on my 15.4" and its a really nice sweet spot for resolution on this sized LCD. I would definitely not go any higher on a 15". I did a quick comparison over at dell and for under $1400, you will get a much faster 6000, compared to a 9300 with a UXGA screen. And although you say weight isn't an issue, I was of the same opinion when I got my 6.5pound ASUS, I've taken it to work twice, and can't be bothered anymore due to its weight. And remember your actual travelling weight will be well over 10pounds with the 9300 when you add a power adapter etc. I now have to buy a smaller laptop for work which is more suitable for travelling with...although I am looking forward to getting a new lappie so I guess it ain't all bad.
Anyway it really comes down to 2 things a)speed b)screen size
depending on which one you value more will give you your answer.
Good luck

That makes my decision even tougher.
Screen size is probably #1 on my list, but not if it causes me to sacrafice too much speed.
I want my laptop to be faster than my desltop and capable of more efficient multi-tasking (more RAM). I have a 1 ghZ Pentium III, and a 368 RAM. Which laptop has the better combination of screen size/clarity (greater than 1280x1024) and also solid speed and efficient RAM capabilities?
Is 512 RAM 1.60ghZ Centrino noticably faster and more efficient when I want to have multiple programs open at once?
Is the 1900x1200 resolution on the 17" WUXGA really much better than the WSXGA screen of the 15'4" Dell 6000? -
I went with the 6000d. The 15.4 wsxga+ screen is large. IMO it is about as large as you would want to go and still have it portable. Also go with the Pentium M. You should buy the ram from somewhere else. Dell is shipping out 400Mhz ram when the system can take 533Mhz. Also go with the 60 gig 7200rpm drive. I got these specs with the $750 off for $1375.

15.4" WSXGA+
512 GB RAM (1 stick)
128MB ATI X300
60GB 7,200 RPM
Truemobile 1450
DVD burner
Good luck with your decision. -
My wife complains of my haphazard operation of PCs. I run WUXGA with a browser, Word, Adobe Photoshop, and Acrobat to do my work (no slowdown with 512 MB RAM). This was also possible on the DV1000 with 512 MB RAM at 1.7 Ghz. No slowdown from either.
You can get WUXGA for the 6000 also. I do medical imaging and photography: I am quite pleased. This machine runs efficiently with what I do. If you want to keep costs down, esp less than $1200, get more power for your money and stick with the 6000. My configuration came just under $1195....

What is so special about the CENTRINO processor? Is it faster than the numbers suggest relative to non-centrino chips?
-
Centrino Advantage:
1 battery life
2 Multiply the Centrino speed x 1.6 to get an equivalent speed to a Pentium 4. However Pentium 4's run on 800 Mhz buses.
AMD has just released the Turion which is supposed to be battery efficient. Don't know what PCs have this processor....

For a definition of "front side bus" go to
http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/definition.php?frontsidebus
and
http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclopedia/F/Fr/Front_side_bus.htm
But I think you will find no P-4 laptops running at 800mhz. This whole bus speed thing is designed by Intel to be very confusing, not unlike their new processor designations. Most laptop P-4's bus speeds run at 533mhz and at least one version of the 2.8 runs at 400mhz while another version of the 2.8 runs at 533mhz.
I know things, things that could bore people to death.
