I am looking at the Inspiron 6400 and the Inspirion 1501. I do not want a base model but I also do not want to put much over $700 in one after taxes. I have a Dell E510 so this computer will not have to be the workhorse computer just mainly will be used to surf the internet and play DVD's on road trips and to show pictures to family of our little girl. I have been looking at the 1501 for a few days now and this is what I had picked out to get on it for $634 +tax.

    AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology MK-36
Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium from XP Media Center Edition
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife™
    1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
    80GB Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (Integrated)
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps)

Here is the 6400 for $669 + tax

    Intel® Core™ Duo T2050 (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows® XP Home
No Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Selected
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife™
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
    120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
    Integrated Audio
    Media Direct 3.0
    Accessories
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

This one comes with the Core Duo and 120 GB for only $35 more I would have to pay $55 for the Vista upgrade but I don't have to have it.

the Intel processors are better in my opinion. The also have a better battery life than the AMD.

one note, the ATI RADEON card would be better if considering small gaming, but since both are Integrated Graphic Processors, they lack the power for any decent game!

so for mobility and power with more battery life...INTEL
    :)

Given those two models I would say go with the Core Duo (better performance).
Since you are already set on integrated graphics, why not consider the 14.1" 640m/E1405 ? you can get same specs in a smaller more portable package, better if you plan to take it around a lot
