Which power source does your XPS Notebook use? Please vote and let us know. Your collective results will help us determine, how exactly you power your XPS Notebook.

The poll primarily wants to determine as to how many people take out their battery when on AC power. It would also be interesting to see how many people use only Battery Power even when AC Power is available and recharge the batteries when they retire for the day.

Another useful thread. My XPS doesn't need a power supply. I just move the electrons through the air from the power socket to the laptop by just thinking about it.

I power my laptop by sheer force of will. My mere presence makes it work :D. Seriously I wouldn't know what kind of PSU is in my laptop.

You should be good for days on this thread then :)

I might have done originally if you had actually set a poll rather than just stated the question ;)

This is not a serious thread. It's like asking a Ferrari car owner what engine the car has. You know it's a Ferrari engine, but still want to ask the stupid question.

I converted the hand crank from my $100 laptop for use with my XPS M1530. When my hand gets tired, I use the AC adapter that came with the 1530.

I initially use a 9 cell battery and when it reaches its critical capacity and hibernates the system, I swap it with another 9 cell battery. When that battery reaches its critical capacity and hibernates the system, I swap it with the initial battery, which would have been charged by now. I charge the batteries using a device I bought on eBay and never via the notebook.

Notebooks are meant to be mobile. What's the point of having a notebook, if you have to connect it to an AC power source? Would you do the same with your mobile phone? The answer is obviously "No"!

Anyways, coming to the poll, please help me choose the correct option as I don't want to spoil the poll results by clicking whatever I think is right.

Is there any point to this discussion? Maybe the one who posted this should be more explicit, what are you trying to ask. Obviously i assume you know what laptops are powered by, or you wouldnt be typing on the computer...

You didn't get your analogy right. Anyways, it would be helpful, if you vote.

The poll primarily wants to determine as to how many people take out their battery when on AC power.

It's kinda the same. Little off on the analogy.
Which power source does your XPS Notebook use? -> battery or AC? That's the logical answer to me. Anyway, this is one of those just another soon to be forgotten XPS thread. When you're gonna wake up in the morning you're not gonna think about what power source people's XPS use.
MonsPubis, I have two posts quoted. Should I be ashamed twice?
    I mean, come on...

Have little choice with mine - usually always on AC. Just using the battery like a UPS in case the power ever fails, but chances of that happening are very rare!

Hmm! So far it looks like there are hardly anybody who remove their battery when on AC Power. Quite surprising, especially since at many places in this forum, it is suggested to remove the battery when on AC Power to reduce heat and improve battery life!

My XPS M170 always runs on AC power. It's no use, the battery is more like a 1 hour UPS.I use my XPS M1210 as an ultra portable notebook so it runs usually on its battery.

But still, my presence inspires fear into my systems...

I am surprised by the number of people who use AC power to run their notebooks. They should buy desktops instead. Notebooks are meant to be mobile and therefore run on battery. Period!

Who are you to decide how someone else should use their laptop? If I want to run mine continually plugged into the wall, it's my decision and I'm no better or worse than the next guy who runs his only on the battery.

Your comment about buying a desktop instead is absurd. I bought a laptop so I can have the option to a) run it on battery, or b) have it plugged in when I'm at home.....that's the point of a laptop, flexibility.

And another reason for a laptop in place of a desktop is that it is more compact for small homes or people who have to relocate periodically (you can actually take it (with all your valuable data) by plane instead of waiting weeks for it to arrive by ship along with the majority of your possessions).

For my old Latitude C600 the battery became useless very rapidly. But my D610's battery has lasted 2 years so far. I think a lot of the problems with batteries being left on continuous charge are reduced today - but I have read it is still good to actually use the battery from time to time.

(an additional reason for removing the battery on AC power might be to reduce whine for those systems where a whine is traced to battery charging.. but there is no way I am going to start inserting and removing the battery all the time)

50 votes but only 5 of them use their notebook on AC Power without battery. With this statistics, which of the statement is correct?

*We do not care about our battery.
*The benefits of removing battery while on AC Power are negligible.
*More votes are required before jumping to a conclusion!

Maybe most peeps are more worried about catching the power cable and accidentally turning off the system with the problems that can cause than battery life. I know I've kicked it out a few times and was glad I had the battery in so it didn't unceremoniously power off.

Or maybe peeps just wanna use their laptops without thinking about it too much.

Dell says this about the subject in my Vostro 1700 manual -

"For optimal computer performance and to help preserve BIOS settings,
operate your Dell™ portable computer with the main battery installed at all
times. One battery is supplied as standard equipment in the battery bay"

But I guess they just want the repeat business ;)

I only use my battery about twice a week - so when I'm done using it, its usually around 40-50%, and I take it out and let it sit until the night before I have to use it - then I charge it.

It should last way longer that way. Lion hates being stored at 100%
