Hi, I'm looking for a Dell gaming laptop, and I mean literally to be run occasionally on the top of a lap. Reviews and comments re the e1705 note how hot it gets. Is this also true of their XPS M170?

    Thanks :eek:verheat:

It would not be wise to get a 17" if you plan on using it on your lap.

17" laptops are not designed to be mobile that often, and they shouldn't be put on an uneven surface such as a lap - they are designed to be on a flat surface like a desk.

Second - if the laptop is going to be on your lap, I don't know where you are going to put the mouse unless it is on a table or something.

I think you should really reconsider . .

But, just to answer your question, they will have about the same amount of heat. I think the M170 will run a bit hotter because it has the higher-clocked Go7800GTX graphics card vs. the Go7800 in the E1705.

Eh my machine is close enough to an M170 to comment, Operational tempertures when playing games can get warm but not sterilizingly warm, in fact I'd argue my S360 Sony gets hotter and my Acer 1710 is WAYYY hotter.

Internal temps never really exceed 80 C for the GPU significantly less for everything else.

For general browsing DVD watching productivity it never really gets beyond "warm"

I'd say the XPS runs hotter. Generally speaking, comps with higher-end graphic cards tend to generate more heat.

I don't know about that. It might just be a little hotter because the 7800gtx has two copper pipes whereas the 7800 has only one copper pipe

Thanks for your replies. I wish Dell would make a 15.4" with decent graphics.

I have my 9300 in my lap at this instant. With FanGUI, it never really gets hot. I lay down and have the keyboard at a 30 degree angle on my chest and thigh.

Hasn't blown up yet, but it's still new..
