I was wondering if grainy screens were still a problem or if that had been resolved, or if certain resolutions had the problem and others did not. For maxing out Half-Life 2 w/8600 GT, 2 GB RAM, and 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo processor, will I be fine with the 1280x800 resolution or would I be much better of with 1440 or 1680?

I would go to one of the Dell Retail Kiosks, if you have any in your area.

When I looked at Inspiron 1520, I found the 1680 screen to be much superior. Better viewing angles and color precision.

I went with the 1280x800 and I couldn't be happier. Very clear and crisp.

I believe the WXGA screens have always been pretty good, except for narrow viewing angles, where as the 1680 screens have better viewing, but it is luck of the draw.

Also you would have no problem maxing out the specs for HL2 even with the 1680*1050 screen, even Episode 2 works great all maxed out for me. I get at least 50 FPS all maxed out for HL2, just with no AF/AA since it really isn't needed at that resolution, haven't benched Episode 2 at all though.
