    Following along with this forum for a bit I thank you all for steering me away from the 5150

    Now I am down to choosing an 8600 or a 600M

    Was wondering pros and cons between the two systems

    Does the 8600 screen look much different from a regular screen when working with Word or Excel?

    When I first came to this forum, I wanted the Dell 5150 as well. I am glad that I did not get it.

    I like the 600m because of its smaller size.

    Note that they are about the same level in terms of battery life. Though the large screen on the 8600 consumes more power, it has a bigger battery.

    GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120

    Pros for the 8600 (in my opinion of course):

    Excellent video card offered (ATI 9600 128 MB)
    Wide Screen
    Great Battery Life
    A nice portable "Desktop replacement"

    Cons:
    Not the lightest (7 lbs) but not the heaviest
    Memory area underneath computer gets very hot

    I don't own a 600m, but it would be lighter and more compact than the 8600. No wide screen, older video card.

    8600 screen looks great with Word or Excel.

    If you want to play games a lot, I recommend the 8600 because of the video card. If you want portability and not worried about games too much, then I would go the 600m.

    Hope that helps.
