For gaming which would be better (or would either not cut it)
8600 Notebook, Pentium M 1.4 400fsb, 128mb ATI 9600 Proturbo, 512DDR
OR
6000D Notebook, Pentium M 1.6 533fsb, 128mb ATI X300, 512DDR2

the X300 is a bit of a problem in the 6000 as it's not really made for high-end games. The 9600 Pro with 128MB would actually be better I think, but that 1.4GHz processor is a bit slow. I'd look for something above 1.6GHz at least with the older Pentium M processor.

This might be a good option for you then. Dell is offering this deal on the old 8600's.
Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook, Pentium®M 1.4GHz, 15.4" WXGA, 128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON 9600 PROTURBO, 512MB, 60GB, CD-RW/DVD Combo, XP Home, 802.11b/g WLAN » only $872.00 + Free Shipping
Can't change alot of the options, but for the price you really can't beat it. If you happen to be a student or a teacher, you might be able to order this through EPP and ask if they will honor the 600 off coupon code through home. I was told they can honor Home coupon codes but not small business.

between the 8600 with ati 9600 and the 6000 with the X300 for gaming there is not question that the 8600 would be the better choice for you, IMHO. The 9600 equivalent in the new gpu's from ATI is the X600, which is available on the Latitude D810. Why the 6000 only offers the equivalent of a 9200 I have no idea. I imagine Dell will offer the X700 at some stage in the future on the 6000 when they finally replace the 8600 with an equivalent version in the 6000 line.
Which would you choose?
