You need to check windows updates.. Install any of the windows updates and device drivers.. SP1 is picky about drivers. Also AV programs.. firewalls are problems like zone alarm and for me kaspersky version 6 gave me issues. Best thing is to disable AV programs before installing sp1. Sounds like you have a driver conflict and sp1 sees that and smartly stops the install which is a good thing.
In some cases, there are devices that do not have drivers that support sp1 yet. I think some of the Conexant sound card drivers are having issues with sp1. So not everyone may be able to upgrade to sp1 at this time. -
I had the same issue. You should have recieved an error code with the message. Google the error code and there may be a hotfix.

The link I supplied above is the result of checking the error code. It has 5 steps to try to solve the problem. I went throught them all. I would expect an "Your not eligible" message rather than an outright crash message if its some other reason.
im sure someone else with a recent 1720 has gotten it to work? -
There are some Technet users who have been claiming the same problem. When you did the sfc \scannow, where you able to rectify all the corrupt files?
-
you need to look at the error codes for all the updates that failed and see which update is causing the rest to fail, after you rule that update you need to disable it and reupdate it should work.
-
Booji, your right it says "100%" but if you read on it says some files could not be fixed.

I'm going to assume that you've already contacted Dell support about the SP1 error, and have been told that there have been no Dell 1720 upgrade problems reported.
Did you have a previous version of SP1 installed? -
Well, after my post in the "remove bloatware thread" about removing the bloatware rather than re-installing I have now re-installed. I didn't really gain any space (maybe 2 GB) and the speed is the same in my opinion.
I probably should have mentioned earlier that the problem with SP1 was during download from windows update it would hang at 20% downloading with an error number. That error led me to the above link.
I even tried the 450MB standalone installed and after it decompressed I got the same error number and it quit on me.
I was never able to completely clean up my errors from SFC /scannow either.
At any rate I am at installing it now (DL is complete) after re-installing Vista and I expect it will work properly.
I should also note that I have not installed either the conexant or sigmatel drivers so I guess we will see what happens. -
Here is an interesting update. I actually bought two identical 1720 systems. One for my wife and one is mine. I ended up configuring the OS on hers removing the bloat etc.. I then imaged it to mine using symantec's enterprise version of ghost 11.01. So starting out we had identical laptops. I then added software like Visual Studio 2008 and some other tools I use.
So.. on to the interesting part.. last night I updated her system to SP1 through windows updates without any difficulty whatsoever. As I stated at the start of this thread I could never do it. In fact I ended up doing a clean install to get it to install. I did not install all my apps first this time though, I installed only the OS and Symantec Enpoint protection and then started going through windows udpates until SP1 hit and it went through fine.
I find myself speculating that it might be related to VS or something I installed now -
If you have "internal error..." (Error code 0x800700D) message the reason is an IO error during instalation of Vista Service Pack 1. You won't be able to figure that out from Microsoft help forums where they are telling you to check your memory, your hard drive (your car, refrigerator, dishwasher etc).
Most of the time everything is 100% OK with your PC. You will spend hours reading Microsoft posts and still you will not be able to install Vista Service Pack 1.
So this is the deal. The error you get is because the permisisons. I know it sounds strange, but there is easy way to prove that I am right. Just try to copy SP 1 exe file to some other place like your other PC (shared folder) or some USB storage device. You won't be able to copy this file because you will get the same error code but this time the message will be different (IO failure).
In order to install Vista SP1 just download this file to some other place on you network or maybe even USB storage (most of them are large enough to store 400MB which is the size of SP1 update). Click on file to start installation. You will have Vista SP 1 installed in 1 hour or so.
It's strange but it is a way that I installed Vista SP1 without any problems. Also, you can try to turn off UAC control before installation. I did not try to install service pack 1 using this way so I do not know if it can help. As I said I did install Vista SP1 using USB storage device to store SP 1 EXE file.
I hope it will help you.
You can find some information about Vista UAC here:

While installing Vist SP1 I get: An internal error occurred while installing the service pack
