DID YOU or DID YOU NOT have problems with you're Dell notebooks that required or would have required the use of the warranty within the first 3 years of purchase?

A couple of the older ones at my company had to use the warranty this year (about 3 months short of it running out)

Mainly due to dust clogging which led to overheating..

All notebooks make you use the warranty eventually within those limits, at least all of the ones i've seen.

I have just ordered my first dell laptop (1520), but my dad has had an old Latitude for over 7 years and it has worked perfectly, aside from the battery life deteriorating to about 1/2 hour. My friend who has owned over 20 laptops tells me DELL's never last more than a year, and that made me kind of regret my purchase of a 1520. :D

I don't have a Dell laptop yet... but the results made me laugh (even tho its only 3 voites)

I DID have problems but I did'nt have the extended warranty - 66.67%
    I DID'NT have problems and I did'nt have the extended warranty - 33.33%

... those who needed the warranty didn't get it... and those who didn't, got it. LOL...

Got a Inspiron 5150, had a motherboard replacement under my one year warranty, HDD death one week after the warranty ran out, and cracked plastic below the keyboard area. Nonetheless, I'm most likely going to get a 1520 :)

Ah! I'm getting scared looking at those results and reading your comments.

Just ordered a 1520 with the anti-glare screen (which many ppl have had problems with).

I never get extended warranties simlpy because I don't believe in them. Us customers shouldn't have to PAY EXTRA just so we can hold the manufacturer ACCOUNTABLE for the quality of their products. Maybe accidental damage protection, but I believe that manufacturers should quit making 'junk'.

I use my laptop 10h/day so they tend to age quite fast. The past 3 laptops I've used in my life has all required repair beyond the 1st year of warranty (and thankfully, all but one had the 3 year extended warranty, which was well worth the price :) ).

I leave all my laptops on at least 16 hours a day and have only had problems with my 700m after 2 years. Complete care is well worth its price when it comes to laptops.

am i just lucky or do you ppl use computers differently from me?
even my old school 5-6 years old Pentium 4 mobile powered big ol- extremely hot Inspiron is still working now with no hardware problems.
i also have 2 year old 700m is still going strong, no hardware problems yet.
same for the 2 1 year old 6400.
note most of those computers are on 24/7, well they do automatically go into standy-by after a while but they all get some pretty heavy use.

most of my problems were due to wear&tear, although that USB thing was an exception. Otherwise, cracked palmrest, wire breaking in LCD, speaker, adapter, worn out keys, all due to my opening/closing lid, connecting/disconnecting adapter, picking up the laptop by a corner, typing a lot on the laptop... So yeah, hardware-wise, 700m did hold up pretty well, but then I had it for more than 2 years, it's more like 2&3/4 years now (had it since october 2004). I'm pretty sure if I didn't use the computer all too much, I would've had 0 problems. In your case, you obviously don't use both computers simultaneously... so you spread the wear between the 2... not so for others ;)

This is my fourth dell and third dell laptop. First had a bad screen and bad internal battery that had to be replaced about one month after purchase, and I'm using it still after having dropped it a few times (I bought it in 2000.) Second (6400) has had no issues after about three years. Then I bought two 1705s last Feb. One has had no problems except for the crap I do to it (I bashed it around during travel one time and now the fan clacks when on high speed) and I did something weird to the AC adapter. The other has had its DVD drive and battery replaced and a weird red line down one side of the screen that appears and disappears randomly. The line appeared after the 1 year warranty ran out though so tough luck on that.

I'd like to add that I am really really rough on my machines in my estimation, and Dell stands up to it really well. I'm happy with my experience -- I've ordered two more: m1330 and 1720.

I have a 1505, keyboard keys broke off and hard drive failed in the 11 month. I got them fixed just under the wire.

I'm now (post warrantee) getting an occasional error telling my my Dell power supply is not a Dell power supply so it won't charge the battery.

vote: HAD PROBLEMS, NO WARRANTY :(

oh man, it was HORRIBLE! First my speakers went out, then my battery life was drained...now the frikin thing won't turn on unless the power cord is in exactly the right position. Stupid 700m. I LOVE YOU but you obviously HATE ME, lol.

Let's not even talk about what happened to my boyfriend's dell on account of my accidents! If he didn't have the 3 year warranty then i would've had to buy him at least 3 new computers!!

    GO THREE YEAR WARRANTY :)

Both my Latitude CpT C and Inspiron 500m had harddrive failures on their third years. Both were not under extended warranty and the replacements had to be purchased.

My old Inspiron 4150 (4.5 years old) had so many problems in the first 2 years....2 failed lithium Ion batteries and a failed hard drive that wouldn't boot anymore. This is in addition to something I never expected...TONS AND TONS OF NOISE from A RIDICULOUSLY loud fan due to the computer's apparent overheating problem that it has 24/7 a few minutes after the laptop has started up. But...in the end it came through and still works. However, I avoid it whenever possible because of the overly loud fan noise...it's so ridiculous. It makes like 5x the noise of my desktop....and my desktop has 7 fans!!!!

If you get a Dell, get complete care.

I have Inspiron 8600. Got it in June 2004. 4years protection.

I've had 3 hard drives (first replacement in october 2004), 3 cd/dvd drives, 2 power cords, 2 batteries, and I have to replace the casing because It's cracked.

And all for free. So even though there support people do suck sometimes, every once in a blue moon you will get someone who knows what they are doing, they will just send you replacement parts :D ... best part about the hard drive, I had a 60GB, but they messed up and sent me a 40GB, then I sent it back so now I have an 80GB. And I still have accidental damage protection for another year ... debating throwing it out a window for fun ... cuz I'm getting a new one. And yes I would get a dell again.

Yea. It happens to all notebooks. I have an old IBM Thinkpad a22e (circa 2001-2002), that's had hd failure twice and randomly BIOS beeps but it's still trucking along with it's new battery.

Moral of the story is, if you can't afford to get a new laptop after the 1 year warranty expires and your laptop begins to fail, get the damn 3 year warranty.

Not all of them. I heard one Toshiba laptop worked for 8 years, straight, with no problems and he (a friend of mine) was even able to sell it to somebody else after 8 years.

But with Dell, forget it. Who are they going to sell the new models to if the old models still work? You know what I mean

i have a 4-5 year old Inspiron 5100 thats still working properly. i don't wait until my computer break down before i get rid of it. its much more cost efficient to sell your computer every 2 years when they still have pretty good resell values and buy a new one as opposed to wait 4 years and try to sell that. You know people might be willing to spend $400-500 bucks to buy a Pentium M based laptop from 1-2 years ago but you'll be lucky if you can unload a Pentium 4 mobile for over $200. then again i do like computer video games, so i kinda have to get a new computer every 2 years. i don't know why anyone would buy a 8 year old laptop when you get much better brand new ones for $300-400 bucks.
