    Hi.

Am in discussion with Dell about my m1330 that I've returned to them. Two issues are being sorted out, the third one is that of CPU whine. He says that the techies say that they all have the whine. Is there anybody out there who has received multiple m1330's where some have had the CPU whine and others have not?

Also, the Dell guy said that the Vista SP1 patch would fix the CPU whine issue... Smells like BS but could he be correct?

SP1 might fix the whine, it could be that the processor is not running correctly causing it to screech in pain
No i don't have an m1330 so i can't answer the first question

    amcGO1,
I have had 3 M1330's two w/no whine and 1 with the whine. I think the M1330 is a terrific machine.

    good luck.

SP1 isn't the magical cure for Vista we were all hoping it would be, so to believe that it will wizard away the single most frustrating side effect of Intels Santa Rosa platform as a convenient by-product of its very installation is a teeny bit of a stretch.

In short, the rep. was lying... badly.

Our office has received several Dell XPS M1330 notebooks and none of them had any CPU or Southbridge whine.

EMI (Piezoelectric Effect in some cases) is the root cause of whine. Some of my colleagues' notebooks whined when at home but not at office. It turned out that the concentration of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Cellular signals were too high in their apartments. When they started using their notebooks in their bedrooms away from TV, Microwave, the whining disappeared without a trace!

EMI issues can be solved by reducing the interference but there is nothing that can be done for Piezoelectric Effect issues except replace components or replace the notebook itself!

I can vouch for this. When I'm in the kitchen near the TV + radio + microwave + dishwasher (does that even matter? lol) the thing goes nuts.

I have received 7. Not one had the whine and I know that was just luck. There is still no fix for the whine.

    sinstoic,

Although I cannot discredit you on this you are not entirely correct. My history with this is extensive and goes back a few years now to include working with Dell. The squeal comes from the direct area of the CPU and heatsink and can be very loud. My M1210 was. We changed each and every part on that system and learned that, when installed in another machine, the part was serviceable. When put back into the M1210, the squeal is back. We also learned that it has to do specifically with the total electrical combination (yes, in low power state) because its intensity would change on replacement parts being introduced, but never would it dissappear.

Further, there are instances where it appeared after the fact (recently with my sons Compaq) and I know of a few where it dissappeared.

If you would like I can find my extremely lengthy Dell thread on this. Three of us got replacement systems as a result of the effort put into assisting and identifying the cause.

I can also point you to an article where Dell states that it piezoelectricity and well within guidelines. HP stopped accepting returns because they published the same notice. Lets be lucky Dell never.

Here's the forum link. Heres the Dell response.

Flamenko, I have a question. Do any of your 1330s' screens get a ripple at the very top of the screen whenever you move the laptop? My new one gets a ripple and also gets some slanted lines at the very top whenever the unit is moved/adjusted.

Is it the same ripple that would occur if you pressed the screen? You should take and post a pik in a new thread.

It does that along with something that I have never seen before. Diagonal lines \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ across the very top of the screen in a rippling effect. It isn't a videocard problem, it's definitely the screen.

I have never seen that. Don't be afraid to call XPS support?

I went and looked at it again and now I don't know what to think. Looks like it isn't the screen being moved that causes that, it's when I move my head and change the viewing angle. *shrug*

I don't really want to get it replaced because I got the Toshiba on the first one replaced with a CMO last week. Plus the tech mauled the poor thing and now it squeaks when you open and close it. The replacement laptop's Toshiba screen has the sparkle but at this point I don't even care. Seems like my chances of getting a better one are nil.
