for some reason dell's business notebooks are better built and long laster than the home ones.

i have an old latitude D610 that has been through 2 high schools over a period of 3 years and still works as well as it did on the day it was delivered.

obviously dell doesn't want home users using their notebooks for TOO long...

Having been around, owned and used ALOT of Dell laptops I think it varies alot on the system. Some of the Latitude and Vostro systems are NOT very well built while some of the Inspiron and XPS systems are very well built.

Good luck! That is one beast of a rig, and I wish I had the means to get an SLi XPS 17in. But alas my vostro still has more then the means to make me all giddy inside. :p

Ive seen some really nice home based dells in my day, the XPS line is very nice. But I have also seen some issues with a co-workers inspirons or the same generation as my vostro. When I handle my vostro it feels like a tank, between the solid construction and metal chasis it feels so solid. I havent handled any XPS systems or latitude models, but as for solid feel I have to agree that the inspiron feels a little less sturdy when compared to my vostro. But then again the inspiron is the normal construction and the vostro has a metal chassis. Now had my vostro been entirely plastic it would be a different comparison. Either way the inspiron feels really nice, and I for one am a fan of the dell keyboard setup. Had the home model been cheaper per specs I would have gone inspiron even now after handling a few of them.

I love my Vostro 1500. It does everything that I put it through. Works great as a media center PC! :)

Well, I've got 4 of them, so it's a "love-hate" kind of dynamic going on:

E1705: I like it. If the chassis didn't suddenly bend so that it's wobbly when you try to type on the keyboard rather than using the wireless board, I'd love it.

    D630: LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

D420: After getting a replacement machine, I love it. Don't get me wrong, the design has its drawbacks, but you know the limitations when you buy it, and it does what it's supposed to do, and flawlessly.

Vostro 1500: Don't even get me started on this P.O.S.

    Average? Like-Plus.

I disagree to some extent... When I purchased my Latitude, the Inspirons felt pretty flimsy in comparison. I've had it for 3-4 years now and although I've changed the battery and the keyboard, my D610 has held up wonderfully.

I think that recently Dell has stepped it up with their home/personal lines.

That being said, I love my D610, but am going to be switching to a Vaio soon!

    i have 2 dells:
the inspiron 9100 and the xps m1530.
the inspiron 9100 is a tank, to say the least. its about 8-9lbs not including the power brick and sort of was the first "gaming laptop" back in its day. however, the build quality is pretty lackluster. the palmrests have faded, the cover is easily scratched, the hinges get wobbly, and there is a flex all over the place. the backlight on the screen has severely faded since the battery short circuited, so its on minimum brightness and i cant turn it up. the most annoying though is that it sounds like a jet engine
the xps m1530 is nicely built, quiet, and has no flex. i really think Dell has stepped up their game.
either way i love both of my laptops and they have served me well
