Thinking about doing some custom work on my e1705; not sure which avenue to go for painting; what works best for a dark matted color and possibly a stencil design on the hood?

There is a forum here for that: Notebook Cosmetic Modifications and Custom Builds

I would say the best way to do so would be to lightly sand the cover, use several light coats of paint for the base color. Spray the stencil on and then a couple of light coats of clear.

Nice; I'll look into it. This bad boy is used as a virtual dyno that runs with my in my rally car (OBD) and I use it to tune my car's spark & electronic settings, so I'm gonna go with a rough-ish look, and for a stencil, I'm gonna get Sam the rabbit on the hood of it. err... LID, i meant.
