Take into account that this comment is coming from someone who ordered a SUNSHINE YELLOW Inspiron! ;)

Agreed. Compared to the 1500, which in my opinion looks pretty bloated/bulky, I think the Vostro 1400 looks pretty good. Particularly because the 1400 doesn't have a ton of space between the top of the keyboard and screen (unlike the 1500, which does), and has the media buttons up above the keyboard, verses below (again, unlike the 1500).

Overall I really like the look of my 1400, as it has in my opinion an Apple-like minimalistic look to it.

at first glance, the vostro might look pretty darn ugly but it looks way way better in person.

In fact, i passed on quite a few very good vostro 1400 deals base on its looks alone until my cousin finally got his and i was able to check it out first hand.

If that were true, the XPS M1330 would be f'ing impenetrable for the price. Sadly, this is not the case, and neither is the thought that the Vostro is anything other than a black sprayed Inspiron.

I can't tell exactly what material it is, but the outer case feels cold as if it was made of aluminum.

    I don´t think there´s a big difference between 1400 and 1500, when you speak that 1500 is bloated/bulky...

my vostro 1400 is gonna be a machine:

    1.8
    2gb
    160gb 5400rpm
    8400gs
    9cell

but yeah, it might look better in person than over the pics.... but i do care how my lappy looks like. It's a matter of personality. And I'm a designer btw so I really do care.

Anyway, I'm gonna personalize it by modifiying it's looks. Lots of work to do I suppose :D

I would imagine everyone who bought the 1420 thinks the Vostro is ugly.

Ultima0 i got my Vostro 1400 today and i can gladly say it looks nice. Its sturdy etc but the only downside is the weight. I have never owned a laptop before so i didnt know what to expect really but it still is MUCH lighter than the Vostro 1500 and it looks better than the 1500.

c'mon, guys...seems like u compare laptop weight to dumbbells lol if u have arms u'll be able to carry around a 17-inch w/o a problem. i have a 1520 and it doesn't seem to be heavy at all....maybe i just work out too much lol u should too

Um, I didn't suggest it was. I was commenting on build quality, and how branding - be it XPS, Vostro or Inspiron really doesn't count for much in differential. Not that you couldn't use it for business purposes, since it's not marketed or intended as a gaming laptop either.

The most Vostro stands for is 'less excess consumer software' in my opinion. A strange 'business' incentive when home users would also greatly appreciate the same courtesy. Otherwise, the Vostro is the Inspiron.

Just as Finkel is Einhorn. :)

I use an XPS m1210 for my work laptop. Nothing else was small enough for me to properly carry around with me and be convenient.

I was with my Vostro 1500 in class today and the dude next to me had an Inspiron 1520 and the two laptops looked exactly the same, just a different colour scheme.

A person can carry a certain weight comfortably and there's two ways you can improve the situation: either give him the same functionality at a reduced weight or keep the weight the same while giving him more functionality.

It's the same thing with laptops. The lighter it is, the more comfortable it is to carry it. On the other hand, the weight difference between a heavy laptop and a light laptop can be used to carry something else.

The military does the same thing. I believe they have a standard weight for all the gear that a single person carries and so they are always trying to find ways of lightening gear so that they can carry more functionality with them.

i had the vostro 1500, it looked nice but it is kinda fat/bloated, i returned it due to the screen, not the size.

I got a nice a deal on a hp dv2500t, and It's a nice looking shiney laptop. But, it's got pretty much 100% plastic casing. They lacquered everything including the touchpad and that made the touchpad even worse because my finger keeps getting stuck. The keyboard is not so great.... only thing its got going for it was screen (LG) and looks.

I called dell and dell game me a SOLID SOLID price on a Vostro 1400 and I did not hesitate ONE BIT.

This is how I feel about my Vostro 1400. I could not be happier with it.

As a first time notebook owner, I love all the little things Dell did in this design to ensure this notebook was portable, sturdy, and stylish.
