64GB SSDs should be under $500 within a few months. (Ordinary usb flash is already under $10/GB retail.)

Of course all kinds of electronics get cheaper every day; once I have a comfortable size SSD, I'm not going to worry about how much the price drops after my purchase. But if I were to get a drive so small that it is a royal pain, well, then I'll probably be acutely aware of it when I see larger drives becoming cheaper.

I suspect that anyone who buys a 32GB SSD now will regret it within 4-6 months. Personally I'm waiting for 128GB, which may not be affordable for a year or more. But even if you don't need 128GB, I suggest holding out for 64GB. Especially if you have or might get Vista.

Most if not all the USB flash drives use MLC (multi-level cell) NAND, and not the much faster SLC (single-level cell) NAND, which I'd imagine is what most fast SSDs would use. SLC is something around 2X the cost per bit of MLC NAND. I'm not certain SSD prices are going to drop at the rate you're talking about. The MTRON 100MB/s SSD (32GB) is still priced over a grand. That's the kind of performance I'd want from an SSD.

I agree with you. With the pace of advancement in NAND, most SSDs will become obsolete if not in terms of speed then certainly in terms of size. Prices are dropping way too quickly for me to want to attempt to 'catch a falling knife'.

The price of a 32GB SSD hasn't moved much in 4 months. These drops usually happen in steps. Likely, when 64GB SSD drives are introduced, price points will drop for both until the next step down.

Theres only one reason that the SSD is offered with Dell and some other brands. A number were bought at a reduced price of 350ea US as a one time offer to laptop manufacturers. Dell jumped aboard according to their own reports which kinda changes their story that they dont have stock and only order it when the item is ordered.

In any case...my guess is that in a few months the 32Gb will dry out with Dell and the 64Gb may come through, although I still feel the 64Gb will still have a high starting point. Considering what I paid for my entire system which was about 1187 pre tax Cdn, the drive was as good as free...so never a regret on this one.

Thats the way I look at it anyway.

Ah true, you did get it for a steal of a price, so for you, perhaps no regrets. ;) But at the full price of $550 or whatever it is regularly, I'd imagine it's a hefty amount to swallow for most people.
