Out of curiosity, who is the better notebook manufacturer within consumer lines, Dell or HP? This poll is based on the aspects of components, reliabilty, service, etc...

Please post your reason(s) for your choosing.

hp. In most cases, cheaper, and better support for lower end computers.

Dell tends to be the cheaper one. Both suck arse in support. Both are average for reliability.

I've had generally better experience with Dell customer support than HP customer support... both are pretty cheap.

Because Dell is cheaper I guess, does that mean more prone to hardware failure due to Cheap? components being used?

I like Dell's configurations better. More variety, especially with the graphics cards. The price difference is negligible.

Is Dell as bad as I feel it seems from seeing so many problems being reported on the Dell forums here?

I have a Sony Vaio FZ notebook on its way to me, but that cost me nearly $1,500 while the Dell Inspiron 1525 is something more affordable and I can get for about $975, plus the Dell has the option for a 1440 X 900 screen resolution, the FZ does not and is capped at 1280 X 800. I don't do heavy gaming, only a few internet Flash based games.

Should I return the Sony Vaio FZ and get the Dell Inspiron 1525 instead? I need honest opinions because both are very tempting notebooks to me and as much as I would like to have both, I can't.

I voted Dell pretty much solely for customizability of their desktops and notebooks at time of purchase.

Also, I could be wrong in regards to HP's more current systems but in the past they were rather difficult to upgrade due to proprietary hardware components.

However, if someone I know is impatient and simply wants to buy an off-the-shelf computer and does not want to wait then I'd steer them towards HP from a local shop.

If you just do internet Flash games, I say return it. There's a lot of stuff that you can buy with that $525 price difference, and there's no need spending extra money on something you don't really need.

I like the HP line EXCEPT for the gloss it is encased in, if it weren't like that, I would go with HP. But HP seems to have gotten a stupid gloss trend started back in 2006 with the intro of their DV series notebooks. I like the matte finish paint because I don't have to worry about constantly cleaning fingerprints and smudges off.

What components SPECIFICALLY does Dell use that are more problematic, the screens are obviously the big issue, but anything else?

Dell gives you more choice in configuration.
Dell gives you CDs to restore your operating system from.
They both have problems with grainy screens. Dell may have more problems, but Dell also gives more choice in screen resolution.
From what I've read, Dell has better service.
I don't know which is more reliable. I suppose it depends on the model.
The HP Verve models look really nice.
HP's have better speakers. The speakers in the XPS M1330 and M1530 are an embarrassment compared to what HP has in similar size notebooks.

    Overall I voted for Dell.
I was thinking of getting an HP dv2700 CTO, but then heard that they ran hot because of the small hole for the fan intake and that HP was having motherboard problems. The dv2700 CTO is also a little heavier than the M1330 (though they sure do sound better). HP doesn't seem to have a 13.3" model.

    apple.....lol

If you want an overpriced paperweight...

I think you're skewing the results by asking this in the dell forums. Post a simliar pole in the HP forum and compare the two.

I would never buy an hp, then again I told myself that I would never buy a Dell, and here I am with a fully loaded XPS M1730.

DELL of course...not competition here...HP has bad customer service ( im not saying dell's is any good but better than HP) . Also HP laptops tend to overheat easily and most of them are used for business purposes...the only good one is probably the 8710w/p. Dell on the other hand, has the XPS gaming line, which has laptops for a reasonable price ( sometimes)...and they can be customized much better than the HPs. IMO..

BTW...why are u posting this in a DELL forum...of course there will be more dell fans here

    Haha! Good one! :D

    Macbook Pro:

    Intel mobo
    Intel CPU
    nVidia or Intel GPU
    Seagate HDD (may vary)
    Panasonic DVD R/RW (may vary)
    AUO display
    etc...

So why's the hardware in a Mac best? Is there anything Apple branded besides cosmetics and logo?

The only appealing things about a Macbook is the o/s and the illuminated keyboard.

Other than that Mac is just like any other notebook. :)

Dell, hands down. My HP notebook died within 4 days, sent it back with no problems but still ... 4 days? My mom's wireless card died out within a couple of months and it's just been a pain to own HP products. I also think cosmetically, they're really ugly plastic toys. Their printers are good though, but laptops ... nah. I'm morea than satisfied with Dell and Dell's customer service.

Btw, I found HP to be cheaper than Dell, but I could have drawn a weird combo of coupons and discounts.

I haven't had good experiences with HP.

If I had the cash, I would choose Fujitsu. Very liable, solid built but very expensive.

Dell systems seems to be easier to recognize. XPS for gaming, Latitudes (I have coworkers who use these and they really beat it up and I'm surprise the D620/D630 laptops are that durable, but I have looked at the laptops and they still work after the abuse!) ... anyway Latitude for business, Inspiron laptops for casuals, budget pricing, student usage, etc. Oh Precision Workstations for the CAD, graphics, movie editing and other heavy productivity users. I know what system fits what I need and I'm not confused about which laptop to research for.

Dell without a doubt. Although their laptops are less attractive, they offer better prices, more power, and the best warranty on earth. With dell's compleye care I never have to worry about accidentally breaking my laptop. I'm careful of ocurse but ifi I ever accidentally spill water or something on my laptop it gets replaced without question. that kind of service can't be beat.

Umm, HP has accidental damage protection too. So does every other company.

Like I said, they're pretty much equal in all accounts. Pick the one that looks better. Or toss a coin.

HP are good, I have a dv9700t and it runs really well. I agree that they are not made for gaming, neither the inspiron are made for gaming but the inspiron have better graphics than the pavilion (8600GT>8600GS). On the other side HP offer great prices and deals. I also like HP support. I vote for HP.

You know, just based on the hardware I find it really hard to say anymore.

I used to be an exclusive Dell user 'til just about two weeks ago when I bought a used HP tablet (since the XT is a real rip; thanks Dell). While I still think that the HP consumer laptops (DV series primarily) feel a lot more plastic than the Dell consumer laptops (Inspiron series primarily), but the business end of the HP lineup (TC and NC lines) seems to be pretty damn good. The two-year-old TC4200 had some nice touches that weren't found on my less-than-a-year old D830.

Software wise HP is still crap (and let's not even go to their printer drivers), shipping recovery disks instead of OEM installation things. Shipping installation disks is one reason I've stuck to Dell for quite a while now and if things stay the same on the software front, my next new machine will probably be a Dell. If HP could toss their act together, it'd be a toss up.

Dunno about the customer service. It's all crap these days. I've had few run-ins with Dell customer service. Usually I just make 'em send me a certain part and I'll deal with the rest. No need for depot or service personnel nightmares.

Anyways, I voted Dell. I'm still a loyal Dell customer for the most part. They ain't done nothing to disappoint.

Options for configuration and customizations in Canada are better with Dell. Also the Dell website is great, easy to navigate and easy to customize compare to the Hp one. I like their notebook better also. A lot of people do Dell bashing but I always find easy answers on the web and contacting Dell tech support has always been a positive experience for me.

I like DeLL's business line better. You get more for your money and for the most part they are well built, sans the Inspiron (business) line. ;)

I really like the Vostro line, solid notebooks.

I see Dell is winning here. I bet if you post this in the HP section it will go the other way around.
