Why is the Inspiron Blu Ray player drive option costs $200 for BD combo and $400 BD burner while the XPS 1530 costs $500 for a BD combo??

Because they feel that they can charge more. It is the same darn parts AFAIK.

The other game they play is that only dedicated cards can be ordered on XPS...what a rip off, since the base configuration is like $300 more and you get less stuff (and have to pay $200 more for a dedicated card!).
It is no wonder to me that Dell has now fallen to #3. -
I don't know much about blu ray drives, but it could be that the m1530 is slot loading, and the inspiron isn't. Although that still wouldn't warrant a 300 dollar price raise.
-
'cause it's a XPS! No need for further explanation.

They also throw in that sexy "murse" (man purse) to hold or disks etc...LOL!!!
-
It's the slot load! I can't even find a slot loading blu ray player that isn't ridiculously overpriced. It's not worth buying blu ray just yet IMO.

Most laptop drives are the same - just the bezels are different. While testing out a drive that came from a Toshiba, it was put in a Vigor laptop and then my Inspiron 1520.
Thinkpads with their ultrabay are different than the majority of laptops out there. -
Jazzjackrabit I think is right. The one in the inspiron I think is a reader only. The xps one is also a dvd burner i think.

XPS one does burn bluray and dvd/cd
Why Blu Ray drive in XPS is $500 vs $200 for Inspiron?
