Anyone care to comment? I'm planning to buy the Latitude D630 this weekend but I'm curious as to why more people choose the Inspiron over the Latitude.

It's obvious that the latitudes are overpriced than inspirons for a good configuration.

Price. I have to add this because the forum wouldn't let me post "Price." but I think that pretty much just explains it...

    Edits under this

I'm pretty sure there are some good Inspiron/Latitude discussions here - search function.

But pretty much the Latitudes have better customer service, warranties (I think standard is 3 years?), and build quality, while the Inspirons are cheaper and more consumer-oriented (glossy screens, "normal" graphics cards as opposed to the Quadros, etc...

Latitudes are more towards business people while the Inspirons are more towards Home use. Inspirons tend to be a lot cheaper also.

I think the Inspirons look alot better, too. Plus, they seem to have more options as far as configurations.

Simply put, Inspiron notebooks are Consumer Lines, whereas the Latitude notebooks are Business Lines.

The consumer line notebooks are targeted to, as stated, average consumers who would want the best value for the price. It's obviously more popular because it is being marketed for a wider audience, ie Consumers.
Generally, you would find consumer lines to be cheaper and offers good performance.

Business lines however are targeted for ( you guessed it ) business persons. Business people require premium features like Magnesium Alloy casing, Spill proof keyboards, Hard Drive shock protection, and various security features. ( Notice a pattern? ) Business notebooks would consist of these features because generally business people require the best features to keep their data safe. Important documents are worth more than the hardware itself, and thus for Dell to cater to them, they require the best features for maximum uptime.

You also see a premium pricing on the Business lines as compared to the Consumer lines. So it's really up to the buyer to decide. I generally would prefer Business lines over the consumer lines as the premium features are very important for me and the better build quality is always needed.

    Hi Tinapay.

I just got my Dell D630 and love it. Wouldn't want anything else. :) Except maybe I should have gotten the 200GB 7200rpm drive...

    I got the 120GB 7200rpm instead.

    Best,
    Ilham

Latitude has the better build, but at a much higher price (it's a business notebook). With the same hardware specs I can save a LOAD of money by purchasing an inspiron...especially the new 1520 which has a free upgrade of 2gb of ram + 160gb hdd.

I think that Inspirons only seem more popular because the majority of these boards are Inspiron users. In the grand scheme of things (ie Dell's overall sales) I doubt the Latitudes are THAT far behind the Inspirons in terms of sales. It's just that the people Latitudes cater to don't go browsing laptop forums?

I dunno, I have Latitudes and an Inspiron.

My dad has a Latitude that his company gave him more than 7 years ago, and it's still working great. I hope my newly-ordered Inspiron 1520 will last me at least 4 years through college, but what I've been reading here HORRIFIES me. :(

The reason why I got the Inspiron is simply because it's got an 8600M GT option. The Latitudes were never meant to be playing games, at most AutoCAD, etc.

IMO a lot of the so-called benefits to the Latitudes are bogus (and they're entirely bogus on the desktop side).

The real difference is they keep configurations stable for a lot longer, to make it easier to use a single image to restore a system. For that privilege (which doesn't help individual users at all), you get much higher prices and much lower end hardware.
