Why are the Dell SSDs so (relatively) cheap?

    Dell M1730: 320gb 7200rpm to 128gb SSD is $100, and to RAID 256gb ssd (128x128) is $300

    HP HDX 18t 320gb 7200rpm to 160 gb SSD + 500gb 5400rpm (who wants that?) is $600.

    Sony AW: 320gb 7200rpm to 64gb SSD + 500gb 4200rpm (!!) is $420.

Are the SSD's that the Dells use worse quality or something? I really want an SSD with my next laptop, and I'm leaning towards HP or Sony because I think I want an 18.4 inch model, but it really, really surprises me that the Dell SSDs are so much cheaper. Anyone have an explanation, or am I missing something obvious?

they can sell them cheaper because they get massive shipments?

<strike>they are lower quality ?</strike> not true

if you want a good SSD you want a OCZ vertex or an Intel

on newegg, most of the 128gb SSDs are 250-300 bucks.

Assume you're paying around $100 bucks for the 320gb 7200 when you're buying a laptop through dell. For another $100 bucks through customization, you get the 128gb SSD, which is $200 and cheaper than anything on newegg.

Considering the outrageous prices for the standalone SSDs, the ones they put in the laptops must be of much worse quality? no? Have there been any issues yet with the SSDs being shipped with the laptops?

the intel or vertex SSD do not stutter and will be quite a bit faster then a cheap SSD.

if price is the issue then just get 2 HD in raid

HD tune i stay over 200 usually stay at 210 and max at 223mb speed

Actually Dell uses the Samsung SSD's which are very good.

And they have such good prices because they can buy in a bulk that makes newegg look small and insignificant. Plus they make their money off the systems as a whole and sometimes more or less off individual componets.

And i think sony had a typo... i dont think they make a 500gb 4200RPM drive (should be 500GB 5400rpm)

Don't forget - you pay a premium for the Dell system alone.

Actually Samsung's SSDs are pretty much as "high end" as you can get with drives most of us mortals would consider buying.

Intel, Samsung, and (finally) OCZ with its Vertex are the 3 best drives to get (not counting SLC drives) right now.

I understand that, but considering two of it's biggest competitors are selling the SSDs for a very significantly larger amount, it's surprising that it's at this price.
