Why can't you get a decent processor on an E1705 anymore?

With today's "specials", they made it so the only availible processor on any of the E1705 is the Core Duo 1.73 GHz...why would I want that?

I would rather pay more money for another company's system then get that thing. I want my 2GHz processor.

This is the second week in a row that their "specials" have made me not purchase an E1705. Last week the only system with a Core Duo that didn't come bundled with Microsoft Office and crappy antivirus subscriptions which drove the price up was the one that they were offering free 2GB of RAM on and that meant you couldn't use a coupon code on it, so the price was rediculous. Now, you can use coupons on the good system again but it doesn't matter because the processor is crap.

    Get it together, Dell.

You could always try calling them and see if you could order it that way, rather then going through the site because it doesn't have the options that you want.

Will they let me use coupons on the phone? If not, it's def. not worth it and they've lost business.

Yeah 2.0 sure is a nice, round number.

Good luck CvcDrk, there are definitely a fair number of competitors that will let you get the configuration you want.

There was a story or something a few weeks ago that Dell was going to change their pricing strategies, so i think this is part of it. You can try and call dell to get it changed, but I can't promise that they will upgrade your processor. As for the coupons, they only work on certain systems - mainly the middle and lower spec systems.

For more info on the coupons, check out this thread and my second post (post #6)

I wasn't asking if they would work on the system, I know they would work on the system online. I just don't know if they will accept them on the phone (I doubt they will).

I don't know of any compeditors where you can get as much stuff in the system as you could in a Dell two weeks ago.

I was posting the information about the coupons because if you go for a 2.0ghz, the coupons will not work - doesn't matter if you use the phone or online. The coupons do not work for any configuration that is a 2.0ghz (meaning high spec system).

They've always worked on the 2.0GHz systems in the past. I bought a E1505 for a cousin a few weeks ago with a 2 GHz processor and an x1400 and the $750 coupon worked fine.
I've also configured the E1705 (before the processor change) with a 2 gHz processor and a 7900GS and the coupon worked.

The limitations on coupons are clearly marked under the Terms, and they only exclude XPS systems.

Like I said, they changed everything over night. You use to have the option to choose 2.0ghz last night and today you don't. No, the coupons don't have the ghz restriction in the terms, but they do say only certain e-value codes are available for the coupons. Considering that only the 1.73 is the only option right now, I don't think you can upgrade to 2.0 and use the coupons.

You can try and call Dell. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll take the coupon and upgrade your specs. Generally they don't take coupons over the phone, but some users have been able to use them.

I apologize for my previous post. I didn't mean for it to come off that you can't use the 2.0 + coupon option. I meant that you can't choose the high configuration system and use the coupons at the same time. You have to choose middle and upgrade from there, but because of the e-value codes, the pre-configured high spec systems are usually not compatible with the coupons.

I'm still trying to figure out whether or not these 533mhz processors can be pinmodded and overclocked up to 667 processors like the old Pentium M CPUs could be. If they can be, you can save a lot of money by getting one of these less powerful processors.

Just get one with the crappy processor, then get a hold of a Merom engineering sample :) Then you can sell the old processor. You'll be a happy camper.
