So I put XP on my brand new Inspiron 1520 and the benchmarks came back worse than Vista but it's the other way round on my PC, why is this? Is it down to the processor? should I get an AMD dual core or would I better switching to Intel?

Vista works better with dual core cpu's and manages memory much better then xp. What bench marks are we talking about here though? your post was very vague. Either way vista is a better os hands down. People will agrue either way because of driver support or something else. If you properly set up a vista machine the overall performance will be better (yes I know games are still slightly slower).
