Ok this is a serious problem
after pressing the power button it looks like the computer starts but the screen does not come back. I have to manually turn off the computer/restart it.

it's kind of like when a kid doesn't want to wake up in the morning...
Doesn't really sound like a serious problem...just look at your power settings when you restart it to see if you can change any of it -
Actually... it's a relatively common problem, but a minor one.
It's something about Vista not supporting sleep using the the nVidia drivers.
Try updating drivers from laptop2go.com
I believe that illmatic has some good suggestions as to what you should choose. -
If you're running Vista I suspect it's a known issue with the OS... it doesn't always recover gracefully from being put to sleep.
I believe the fix is coming out tomorrow and will be avaliable through Microsoft updates. Let us know if it corrects the problem. -
just kidding..

You applied these? (sorry, not meaning to second guess you, just want to make sure):
938979 Vista Performance and Reliability Pack
938194 Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack -

once again, try updating your drivers.

Reinstall vista. It fixed that problem for me and many others.

Did you mean Inspiron 1420? I had the same problem with my Vostro 1400. Yes it IS a serious problem - I NEVER shut down the OS, almost always sleep, sometimes hibernate.
So far from what I can tell it is caused by the current Bluetooth driver from the Dell website. As soon as I installed the BT driver, it will go into and out of sleep mode fine for the FIRST TIME ONLY. After that, it will get stuck with a blank screen the next time I tried to put it to sleep. Only thing you can do is hold down the power button to force a shutdown.
I verified this twice. As soon as Dell's BT driver is installed, it gets stuck. As soon as I remove it, I can go in and out of sleep as many times as I've tried. I'll stick to Vista's stock driver for now. You do loose some additional functionalities from Dell's driver - namely the BT radio off option when you right click the BT icon.
Now lets see what happens after I let it grab the OS updates from Microsoft.
I should also add that the original OS installed on the laptop as received from Dell had no issue, but I didn't look up the BT driver version from the factory before I wiped it out.

I really think it's a Vista problem, my dad's Acer had the exact same problem and he was running Vista
-
It's not a Vista problem, it's a Dell problem.
I bought an Inspiron 1501 with Windows XP installed last month. I have not installed any software other than Office (which I purchased OEM from Dell).
When my laptop goes to sleep, about half the time, I can not wake it by pressing the power button. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I have to hold the power button down, let it shut down and then re-boot cold. So, it wastes time.
I had a Toshiba laptop prior to this and it never had this issue. -
Wrong. It is a well-known vista problem.
If you're experiencing it w/ XP, then you are most definitely not in the majority.
It is a conflict with Vista and the nVIDIA drivers. -
It is a typical problem with Windows that if you remove any hardware (e.g. thumb drive) after you put it to sleep, it may not be waken up. This is the case for my HP laptop too.
-
I had this same problem in XP Pro SP2.
It turned out to be a driver issue. -
that is a very severe problem that you can address by returning the Dell and building your self a system that comes out of sleep every time!
-
/facepalm
Not a dell problem.
OS vs. Drivers = laptop that doesn't wake up -
I am having this problem with XP where do I get the drivers to fix the problem. I am on XP and using a D-Link DBT-120 with XP drivers for BT.
Thanks
Why doesn't the Inspiron 1400 wake up from sleep sometimes?
