Why is M3800 lighter than XPS 15 with the exact same guts except video card?

I'll purchase one of the two but I'm still puzzled. On the Dell website, the XPS with SSD+HDD is 2.01 Kg, while the M3800 with SSD+HDD is 1.88 Kg.

I've read about everything that has been posted about these two and watched countless videos.

The chassis, screen, motherboard, battery, cooling etc all seem to be exactly the same for these two laptops -- one can also compare the images of the opened laptops (backplate removed) in the owner's manual. Some other have been posted on notebookcheck.net. When an SSD (mSATA, small) and HDD (SATA, 2.5") are both used then the battery is smaller but same size and capacity (61 Whr) on both.

The only difference is the video card, but hardware wise it's pretty much the same chip (same GK107 Kepler core) and even if it was different, certainly not accounting for 120g difference.

Has anyone got any info on why is the M3800 lighter with the same hardware? Or, if they had them, is it really any lighter than the XPS?

    Something doesn't smell right.

Also, does anyone have any info if the battery will ever be replaceable on these laptops? I didn't find any for purchase anywhere yet.

It also seems that in the UK, Dell does not sell the M3800 with a 91 Whr battery (i.e. no HDD), which is a real bummer. Can they be persuaded to (via company reps perhaps)?

    Alex.

You assume the specs Dell has listed are perfectly accurate..

I do, but why would I assume otherwise? The videos and pictures posted by people who bought the models confirmed that the specs are accurate. Or were you referring specifically to the weight and not the hardware parts?

You gave me an idea though. I'll kindly ask those owners to weigh the laptops and confirm the exact weight.

I have been asking this too... no one can confirm if they are using identical components internally.

I did find the answer in the end (sorry for not posting here). It's the typical misleading crap from manufacturers to make you buy the more expensive product. They are exactly the same weight when having the same parts. The difference in weight comes from whether it uses the 61 Whr battery or the 91 Whr battery.

Slightly off-topic: I like these two models a lot, but I can't stand coil whine and these two models seem plagued by it. I can't understand how on earth a 2500 USD laptop can use such poor components or poorly designed circuitry. There is absolutely no excuse for that.

I'm waiting until the 2nd half of March (Dell doesn't deliver until then anyway) to see if other manufacturers come up with a 15" Haswell based laptop that is of the same caliber (weight, battery, thickness, CPU, graphics) and decide then. It is true that I have read a lot about the XPS and M3800 in the dedicated threads and one is bound to read a lot of complaints on public forums (happy people rarely go out their way to post about their happiness in comparison to the unhappy crowd). It's hard to judge.
